A high-level Indian delegation will visit Norway from August 21-24, 2023
India is looking at closer collaboration with Norway in the fields of fishing and aquaculture.

Potential avenues for cooperation are expected to be discussed when a high-level delegation led by Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Parshottam Rupala alongwith Minister of State, Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying L Murugan will visit Norway from August 21-24, 2023. The delegation will also include Joint Secretary (Marine Fisheries) and other senior officers from the Department of Fisheries.

According to the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, the main objective of the visit is to strengthen the bilateral cooperation between India and Norway in the field of fisheries and aquaculture, as per the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by both countries in March, 2010.

The delegation will hold bilateral discussions with the Norwegian Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Policy Bjørnar Selnes Skjæran, State Secretary, Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries Kristina Sigursdottir Hansen and other key officials on various aspects of fisheries development, resource management, research, innovation and trade, the ministry said on Sunday (August 20, 2023).

The Indian delegation will also attend the Aqua Nor 2023, the biannual aquaculture exhibition and trade fair in Trondheim, Norway from August 22-24, 2023. The exhibition, which is one of the world's largest trade shows for aquaculture technology and innovation, will showcase the latest developments and solutions for sustainable and profitable aquaculture.

The delegation will interact with various Norwegian enterprises that have expertise in different aspects of fisheries and aquaculture, such as fish health, feed, genetics, equipment, processing and marketing.

While in Norway, the delegation will also visit some of the state of art facilities in Norway related to fisheries and aquaculture, such as fishing vessels, fishing harbours, hatcheries, cage farms and seafood processing units. The delegation will learn from the Norwegian experience and explore the possibilities of collaboration and investment in these areas.

In addition to the 2010 MoU on fisheries and aquaculture, a Joint Task Force on Blue Economy was set up in January 2019. A Dialogue on Trade and Investment was also initiated subsequently.

Recent years have seen a growth in economic and commercial relations between India and Norway, especially in areas such as oil and gas, shipping and maritime industries, renewable energy, offshore projects and service sectors. Over 100 Norwegian companies are engaged in India either through joint
ventures with Indian partners or through wholly owned subsidiaries in areas such as ship building, petroleum related services, marine/sub-sea drilling equipment, hydropower, clean energy, and IT services.

During a meeting in Copenhagen in 2022, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store had reviewed bilateral ties and explored ways for expanding collaboration in areas like blue economy, green shipping, renewable energy, investment, and health.
