Violence Erupts During Birthday Celebrations of Abhishek Banerjee
Clashes outside Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee's residence mark his birthday celebrations, leading to injuries and police intervention.

Clashes erupted outside the residence of All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee in Kolkata, resulting in injuries to at least eight individuals during celebrations for his 39th birthday on November 7. The incidents occurred between 2 am and 3:30 am on Saturday, according to police officers investigating the situation.

The confrontation allegedly involved AITC party workers preparing for the birthday festivities and supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). However, the police did not formally identify the political factions involved in the skirmishes.

Local law enforcement has stated that the situation is under control. A significant police presence was deployed outside Banerjee's home, and several individuals were taken into custody. Although allegations regarding injuries to police personnel were made, authorities have not confirmed these claims.

Witnesses associated with the AITC have accused BJP workers of launching an unprovoked assault during the preparations. In contrast, BJP supporters have alleged that they were attacked while en route to Kalighat to purchase idols for an upcoming religious event.

During the altercations, BJP supporters reportedly chanted derogatory slogans and damaged decorations intended for Banerjee's birthday. Abhishek Banerjee later spoke to the media, alleging that the attacks were coordinated efforts aimed at harming him. "There was a conspiracy to kill me. The police were not spared when they tried to control the situation," Banerjee stated.

In the aftermath, Banerjee engaged in a sit-in protest outside his residence until about 6:30 am, even though the violence had subsided hours earlier. Bengal panchayat minister Dilip Ghosh remarked on the situation, suggesting that Banerjee should have arranged his birthday celebration in a more suitable venue rather than on a public pavement.

Ghosh commented, "People usually rent a hall for such events," adding that allegations of an assassination attempt following electoral defeats are common in political discourse.

The incidents continue to highlight the ongoing tensions between the AITC and BJP parties in West Bengal, especially in the context of recent elections where both sides have faced scrutiny and accusations regarding their conduct and electoral strategies.
