V.D. Satheesan Named Kerala Chief Minister by Congress Party
The All India Congress Committee (AICC) has officially named V.D. Satheesan as the new Chief Minister of Kerala. This announcement, made during a press briefing on 14 May 2026, concludes ten days of intense speculation following the recent State Assembly elections held on 4 May. Congress emerged victorious, securing 102 out of 140 seats in the Kerala Assembly and ending the decade-long governance of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) led by the Communist Party of India (Marxist).
The decision, delivered by senior leaders Ajay Maken, Mukul Wasnik, and Deepa Dasmunshi, has been received positively within the party ranks. Satheesan expressed his intent to collaborate with senior party figures, including K.C. Venugopal and Ramesh Chennithala, who were also contenders for the role. He emphasised a "collective effort" in governance as paramount for the upcoming term.
Senior Congress leader A.K. Antony extended his support, highlighting his confidence in Satheesan's leadership qualities. In a conversation with the press, Antony stated, "I wish him success and hope that under his leadership, Kerala will emerge as one of the most developed states in South India in terms of both welfare and development measures."
Despite enjoying considerable backing from several newly elected MLAs, K.C. Venugopal was ultimately bypassed in favour of Satheesan. Reports suggest that the Congress leadership prioritised public sentiment and mass appeal over internal party dynamics. Satheesan has been hailed as a key figure in the party's revival in Kerala and has a notable record of opposing the LDF government on essential issues.
The decision to appoint Satheesan reflects a broader pattern within Congress politics, notably under the influence of Rahul Gandhi. This approach tends to favour leaders with grassroots connections, aligning with the party's objectives for future electoral strategies.
The elevation of V.D. Satheesan signals a potential shift in the party's direction as it strives to unite various factions and rejuvenate its image following years in opposition. The upcoming government is expected to focus on fulfilling electoral promises and enhancing the living standards for the people of Kerala, as articulated by Satheesan in his initial statements following the appointment.
Simultaneously, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Kerala has raised concerns over the Congress-led government being influenced significantly by its ally, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), suggesting that the government may be indirectly governed by the IUML for the coming five years. As the new administration takes shape, both the Congress party and its opponents will be closely monitoring developments on this front.
V.D. Satheesan's ascent marks a significant political evolution for both him and the Congress in Kerala. Entering the Kerala Legislative Assembly as a representative from Paravur 25 years ago, Satheesan's journey highlights the changing political landscape in the state, with hopes pinned on his leadership to usher in a “new era” for Kerala.
