Tensions High Amid US-Iran Conflict: Latest Developments and Reactions

Tensions between the United States and Iran have escalated as significant developments unfold in the region. US President Donald Trump stated that Washington and Tehran are 'getting a lot closer' to finalising an agreement, as reported by CBS News. Trump expressed optimism, stating, 'Every day it gets better and better,' while adding that any deal would ensure Iran’s enriched uranium is handled appropriately.

Despite ongoing diplomatic discussions, violence has erupted. The Lebanese military reported that an Israeli strike targeted an army barracks in Nabatieh, wounding a soldier. The attack occurred even with a ceasefire in place between Israel and the armed group Hezbollah. The army confirmed the soldier sustained moderate injuries from the assault.

Iran’s chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf reiterated the country’s military capabilities, cautioning that a US restart of military action could lead to severe consequences. He warned, 'If the United States foolishly restarts the war, it will face consequences that are more crushing and bitter.'

In a separate development, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed disappointment following the 11th Review Conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), which ended without reaching an agreement. In statements conveyed by his spokesperson Stephane Dujarric, Guterres described the outcome as a missed opportunity for global security, particularly amid rising international tensions. He urged all member states to pursue dialogue to mitigate nuclear risks, emphasising the goal of achieving a world devoid of nuclear weapons as a top priority for the organisation.

In maritime developments, the first Japanese-managed oil tanker, Idemitsu Maru, successfully navigated the Strait of Hormuz and is expected to arrive in Japan shortly. The Panama-flagged vessel, carrying approximately 2 million barrels of Saudi Arabian crude oil, will dock in Aichi Prefecture. Japanese broadcaster NHK reported that the tanker’s crew remains in good health following their transit through the strategically critical waterway, which has faced heightened tensions.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi engaged in talks with Oman’s Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi amid rising diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalating tensions. In another security incident, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported a maritime security incident near Socotra island in Yemen, involving a tanker carrying petroleum products. A small craft reportedly approached the tanker but retreated after the vessel deployed its armed security team. This event follows similar incidents amidst growing security concerns in key maritime routes in the area.

Additionally, in Canada, human rights advocates have requested authorities to deny entry to representatives of Israeli arms manufacturers to a defence exhibition, citing allegations related to Israel’s actions in Gaza. The groups claimed to have filed a legal complaint seeking to bar representatives of Elbit Systems and Israel Aerospace Industries from attending the event scheduled for late May.
