Shubman Gill Hospitalised with Neck Injury During First Test
Shubman Gill, the captain of the Indian Test cricket team, was taken to a hospital in Kolkata following complications from a neck injury. The incident occurred during the first Test against South Africa at Eden Gardens, where Gill experienced significant pain that led to his immediate withdrawal from the match.
On the second day of the Test, Gill faced just three balls before he left the field after hitting a boundary. Reports indicate that he wore a neck brace as he departed with the team doctor, highlighting the severity of his condition. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that he was suffering from a neck spasm.
The 26-year-old cricketer was reportedly in considerable discomfort, prompting scans and a routine medical assessment at the facility. While his vital signs were stable, the BCCI medical team awaited detailed reports to determine the next steps in his treatment. Gill is expected to remain under observation overnight.
Gill's injury occurred while he attempted a sweep shot against South African spinner Simon Harmer. After hitting a four, he quickly showed signs of distress, clutching the left side of his neck and signalling for assistance. Prior to this incident, Gill had appeared to be in some discomfort even before he began his innings, raising concerns about his fitness.
Morne Morkel, India's bowling coach, addressed the media after the day's play, shedding light on the situation. He stated, "Gill is a very fit guy, he looks after himself very well, so it’s just unfortunate that he woke up with a stiff neck this morning. It was a crucial day for us, and just bad timing for him to be sidelined."
Following Gill's exit, wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant filled in as captain. The Indian team is currently trailing by 63 runs in South Africa's second innings, with three wickets remaining. Despite Gill's absence, the team remains hopeful of a successful outcome in the match.
Gill's father is in Kolkata supporting him during this challenging time. As the situation develops, all eyes will be on the young captain's recovery and his potential return to the field for future matches.
