Saudi-led Coalition Intercepts Houthi Missiles Amid Regional Tensions
The Saudi-led coalition announced the successful interception of three ballistic missiles and four drones launched by Houthi rebels toward Saudi Arabia. Major-General Turki al-Maliki, the coalition spokesman, confirmed that the missiles targeted the Eastern Province and resulted in no casualties. The drones were approaching Saudi Arabia's southern regions at the time of interception.
In response to the escalating situation, Saudi Arabia’s Civil Defence agency issued emergency alerts in the Eastern Province and the Al Kharj governorate, advising residents to avoid large gatherings and to report emergencies.
The interceptions occurred as senior officials from Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, Pakistan, and Iran gathered in Tehran to address rising tensions in the region. This meeting aims to facilitate dialogue and prevent military escalation amidst ongoing conflict higher up the chain of events. Prince Khalid bin Salman Al Saud, Saudi Arabia's defence minister, led the kingdom's delegation, accompanied by high-ranking military officials from Turkiye and Pakistan. Photographs of the Iranian leadership present at the talks were circulated by state media, highlighting the collaborative atmosphere among the participating nations.
In a joint communiqué, the four nations emphasised their commitment to continue dialogue to promote cooperation for regional peace. This initiative comes in the wake of a complicated geopolitical landscape, especially following the renewed tensions between the United States and Iran.
Tensions have escalated further in Yemen, where the Houthis seized several strategic areas along the Red Sea coast from Saudi-backed forces, prompting a robust Saudi counteroffensive. In recent months, the Houthis have targeted Saudi airports, ports, and oil facilities, including a significant attack on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, which resulted in multiple casualties.
In a statement following the missile interceptions, the Saudi-led coalition indicated it had also executed retaliatory strikes on Houthi infrastructure, targeting missile storage tunnels and launch sites. The ongoing conflict has exacerbated restrictions on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, contributing to rising oil and petrol prices globally.
In a further development, Egypt’s Parliament has authorised its military to assist Saudi Arabia, indicating a growing regional coalition amid rising hostilities. The situation remains fluid, with implications for both local populations and international stakeholders significantly dependent on stability in the region.
