Rishabh Pant Returns as India Announces Test Squad for South Africa
India's national cricket selectors have unveiled a strong squad for the upcoming two-match Test series against South Africa, part of the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle. The announcement has generated significant attention, particularly due to the return of wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, who has been named vice-captain. This marks Pant's return to Test cricket following a foot injury sustained during the fourth Test against England in July. He was also absent for the subsequent two-Test series against the West Indies.
Shubman Gill has been appointed as the captain of the Indian side, which showcases a blend of experienced players and promising newcomers. The full squad includes:
- Shubman Gill (C)
- Rishabh Pant (WK) (VC)
- Yashasvi Jaiswal
- KL Rahul
- Sai Sudharsan
- Devdutt Padikkal
- Dhruv Jurel
- Ravindra Jadeja
- Washington Sundar
- Jasprit Bumrah
- Axar Patel
- Nitish Kumar Reddy
- Mohammed Siraj
- Kuldeep Yadav
- Akash Deep
Pant's return is seen as a boost for India's batting line-up, especially given his recent performances for India A, where he led the team to victory over South Africa A with a commendable score of 90 in a challenging fourth-innings chase of 275. He replaces N Jagadeesan in the squad, which has also seen the recall of pacer Akash Deep, who takes the place of Prasidh Krishna, previously included in the squad for the West Indies series.
India's selectors have opted to maintain their faith in established players like Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah, alongside rising talents such as Sai Sudharsan and Devdutt Padikkal. The team has had a mixed start in the current World Test Championship cycle, drawing the series against England 2-2 away from home and achieving a clean sweep against the West Indies last month.
The first Test of the series against South Africa is scheduled to be held at Eden Gardens in Kolkata from November 14 to 18, followed by the second Test at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati from November 22 to 26. This series provides an opportunity for the Indian team to solidify their standings in the World Test Championship.
India v South Africa Test Series Schedule:
First Test - 14 to 18 November, Kolkata
Second Test - 22 to 26 November, Guwahati
While the return of Rishabh Pant has been a highlight of the announcement, the continued exclusion of veteran pacer Mohammed Shami has sparked discussions about his future in the team. Shami, who last played a Test during the World Test Championship final against Australia in 2023, has been overlooked for three consecutive Test series, including those against England and the West Indies.
Despite being fit and performing well domestically, Shami's absence raises questions about the selectors' direction, especially as younger bowlers are favoured. His recent success in the Ranji Trophy, where he took 15 wickets in three matches, including a five-wicket haul, suggests he still possesses the capability to contribute significantly to the team.
With Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj leading the pace attack, and Akash Deep making a comeback following an injury, Shami's omission appears to indicate a transitional phase in India's Test cricket setup. As the series approaches, the cricketing community is left pondering whether this is a temporary exclusion or the end of the road for one of India's most successful modern-day fast bowlers.
