Punjab Police Officer Accused of Planting Drugs in Controversial Case
A significant controversy has emerged in Punjab following the alleged involvement of a police officer in planting narcotics at the home of a local political leader. The officer, Assistant Sub-Inspector Sukhdev Singh, was captured on hidden camera placing what appeared to be drugs under a mattress during a police search at the residence of Shiv Sena Punjab leader Mahant Kashmir Giri in Khanna.
The incident escalated after a video surfaced, showing Singh entering Giri’s home in civilian clothes, and subsequently, a team of uniformed police arrived to conduct a search. The situation intensified following the arrest of Gurjant Singh Janta, a driver for Giri, who was found in possession of seven-and-a-half grams of heroin. The police claimed to have recovered approximately 30 grams of heroin from Giri’s residence shortly after the alleged planting occurred.
In the wake of these allegations, Sukhdev Singh has been suspended, and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been instituted to thoroughly investigate the incident. Senior Superintendent of Police Darpan Ahluwalia confirmed the formation of the SIT, which will also examine the roles of other officers involved in the initial search operation. "We continue to believe in accountability and will go to every length to rid Punjab of the drug menace," Ahluwalia stated.
This event adds fuel to an ongoing discussion regarding drug-related issues within Punjab, where concerns about police conduct and public safety have been amplified by recent events, including the murder of an anti-drug activist. The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government is facing criticism from opposition leaders, particularly from Sukbir Badal, leader of the Shiromani Akali Dal, who mocked the AAP’s approach to law enforcement.
Badal expressed outrage upon sharing the video online, questioning the integrity of the Punjab Police and accusing the AAP government of a failure to maintain public safety. His post on social media included, "AAP Punjab promised home delivery of services, but who knew it included home-delivered drugs by the Punjab Police to frame citizens?"
The programme to combat drug abuse in Punjab has faced scrutiny not only due to the recent arrests but also due to the state's historical challenges with narcotics. The allegations against Singh could further complicate the public's perception of law enforcement in the region.
As the SIT begins its investigation, it remains to be seen what consequences will unfold for those involved in this latest scandal. The Punjab government’s response and any resulting policy changes may also play a critical role as they strive to regain public trust in the wake of these troubling developments.
