Nitin Gadkari Proposes Flying Buses for Urban Transport in India
Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, has introduced a visionary initiative of introducing flying buses in urban areas of India. Speaking during the inauguration of the Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway, Gadkari outlined his ambitious plans for an electric mass rapid transport system aimed at alleviating traffic congestion in the country’s expanding cities.
The concept of flying buses is part of a broader strategy to enhance public transport services. Gadkari claimed that this innovation would enable rapid transit, allowing passengers to traverse long distances almost instantaneously. He stated, "Soon, I am going to introduce flying buses. I have already brought seaplanes that can land on water. I even landed one in the sea myself. Under my ministry, I will develop a Mass Rapid Transport System powered by electricity. It will enable people to travel from one corner to another so quickly that they won't even realize how fast they reached."
This announcement comes amid ongoing discussions regarding the implementation of E20 petrol, a new fuel blend consisting of 20% ethanol. Some critics have raised concerns about the impact of this fuel on vehicle performance. In response, Gadkari challenged these critics, demanding evidence of any vehicles that have experienced problems due to E20 petrol.
Addressing the Viksit Bharat Conclave, he highlighted India's dependency on fossil fuels as both an economic and environmental issue, noting the significant annual expenditure on fuel imports, which stands at nearly ₹22 lakh crore. He stated, "There is no case of any car facing issues due to E20 petrol. Has there been any car in the country that faced issues due to the use of E20 petrol? Just name one." He further dismissed claims that misinformation campaigns were being orchestrated around the roll-out of ethanol-blended fuels, saying, "False narratives are being spread about the roll-out of higher ethanol-blended petrol. These are paid campaigns."
Gadkari also championed hydrogen as a crucial element in the evolution of clean transportation. He mentioned his own use of various alternative-fuel vehicles and encouraged the public to adopt new technologies in their daily lives. This push for innovative transport solutions and the adoption of cleaner fuels underscores the Indian government’s aim to enhance urban mobility while addressing environmental concerns.
These initiatives reflect a growing commitment to modernising India’s transport infrastructure while promoting sustainable energy sources. As cities expand and traffic becomes an increasing problem, the introduction of flying buses could provide a transformative solution for the future of urban commuting in India.
