Nithya Raman Elected as Los Angeles' First South Asian Mayor
Nithya Raman has won the Los Angeles mayoral election, becoming the city’s first South Asian mayor and pledging reforms on housing and homelessness.

Nithya Raman, a progressive member of the Los Angeles City Council, has made history by winning the mayoral election, thereby becoming the first South Asian mayor of the city, the second largest in the United States. The Associated Press confirmed her victory on Thursday, with Raman securing 52 percent of the vote, defeating incumbent Mayor Karen Bass.

Raman's campaign was notably supported by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). Her victory is part of a broader trend of increased visibility and electoral successes for left-wing candidates following the recent midterm elections, in which a record number of candidates supporting or affiliated with the DSA gained federal offices. The DSA has stated on its website that it contributed to over 300 candidacies or ballot initiatives during these elections, with at least 105 candidates successfully winning their races.

This pattern of success also echoes that of Zohran Mamdani, a fellow democratic socialist who won the mayor’s race in New York City last year. Nithya Raman, 45, was born in India and previously worked as an urban planner before entering politics. Initially an ally of Karen Bass, she endorsed Bass’s re-election campaign; however, she reversed her stance and announced her candidacy shortly before the filing deadline in February.

In her victory speech, Raman emphasised her commitment to restoring what she described as an ambitious and creative Los Angeles. “For too long our broken and unjust status quo has convinced Angelenos that this is the best that we can do,” she stated. Her administration is expected to focus on expanding affordable housing, enhancing neglected city services, and addressing homelessness by deploying more medical teams to support affected individuals.

Raman's agenda also includes plans to replace the city's police chief, amid concerns over collaboration with federal immigration authorities. Now, she faces the significant challenge of fulfilling her pledges in a city with a population exceeding 3.8 million, especially as Los Angeles prepares to host the 2028 Olympic Games, set to commence in July.

The election result marks a notable turning point, as Karen Bass becomes the first Los Angeles mayor in over 20 years to lose a re-election bid. Her tenure faced substantial criticism regarding the city’s ongoing homelessness crisis and the management of the Palisades Fire disaster, which severely impacted communities while she was abroad.

In a statement following her defeat, Bass extended her congratulations to Raman and expressed her commitment to ensuring an effective transition. “Four years ago, you elected me as the first Black woman mayor in the history of Los Angeles. You gave me the honour of serving the city that raised me, and every single day since, I have carried that responsibility with me,” Bass remarked, underlining the importance of collective efforts to advance the city.

As Los Angeles transitions under new leadership, many will be closely watching how Nithya Raman's policies unfold in addressing the pressing issues facing the city.
