Nipah Virus Confirmed in West Bengal: Two Nurses in Critical Condition
A Pune laboratory has confirmed Nipah virus in two nurses in West Bengal, both are critical as over 120 contacts remain in home isolation.

The detection of the Nipah virus in West Bengal has raised health concerns in the region. A laboratory in Pune confirmed the presence of the virus in two nurses, who are reportedly in critical condition. The nurses are receiving treatment at a hospital in Kolkata, following their diagnosis.

Health officials are currently monitoring over 120 individuals who had close contact with the infected nurses. These individuals are being placed in home isolation as a precautionary measure to prevent the further spread of the virus.

The Nipah virus is known for its severe effects on human health, leading to encephalitis, or inflammation of the brain, which can result in high mortality rates. The virus is transmitted from animals, particularly bats, to humans, often through contaminated food or direct contact with infected individuals.

The West Bengal Health Department has initiated a public health response, enhancing surveillance and implementing strict protocols in the area. Local health authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and report any unusual symptoms.

Dr. Sukumar Mukherjee, a medical expert at the Kolkata hospital, stated, “Immediate and rigorous contact tracing is essential to control any potential outbreak.” Public health campaigns are also being rolled out to educate the community about the Nipah virus and its transmission.

The state has experienced sporadic cases of the Nipah virus in the past, but the recent confirmation has triggered heightened alertness among health officials. The last notable outbreak in India occurred in Kerala in 2018, resulting in significant fatalities.

Authorities are working closely with the National Centre for Disease Control and other health agencies to manage the situation effectively. The public is advised to take necessary precautions, including avoiding contact with potentially infected animals and maintaining hygiene practices.

As the situation develops, health experts emphasise the importance of preparedness and rapid response in curbing the spread of viral infections like Nipah.

Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
