Nepal Protests Erupt Following Self-Immolation Incident
Protests have intensified across Nepal, with demonstrators calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Balen Shah. This unrest follows the self-immolation of Ganesh Nepali, a ride-sharing driver, who set himself ablaze during a confrontation with traffic police in Kathmandu over a parking dispute.
The incident unfolded on Thursday when local authorities attempted to tow Nepali's motorcycle after declaring it was parked in a no-parking zone. Tensions escalated when officers locked his bike while he was seated on it. CCTV footage shows that after a heated argument, Nepali siphoned petrol from his motorcycle before dousing himself in fuel. He died in Bir Hospital on Friday, prompting a wave of protests led primarily by young people.
His death has sparked a significant backlash against the government, with opposition lawmakers condemning the administration's handling of the situation. One lawmaker urged the Prime Minister to confront the public directly, suggesting a need for accountability.
Previous comments made by Balen Shah regarding territorial disputes with India had also drawn ire and led to earlier protests, highlighting a growing discontent with his leadership. Demonstrators have expressed anger over systemic failures that they believe contributed to Nepali's tragic decision. They have rallied under slogans such as "Down with the fascist government" and called for investigations into the actions of the municipal officers involved.
In the wake of Nepali’s self-immolation, a further two incidents of attempted self-immolation have been reported, raising concerns about copycat behaviour among distraught individuals. The police and local authorities have faced scrutiny for their enforcement practices, which protesters argue are excessively punitive and lack adequate protections for workers.
Besides the protests related to Nepali's death, demonstrations have emerged regarding ongoing eviction drives aimed at informal settlements. Protesters claim that the government is failing to provide alternatives for those displaced.
In Parliament, the mood has grown tense. Opposition MPs accused the government of complicity in creating conditions that led to the crisis, questioning the treatment of Nepali by emergency services after his self-immolation. An official investigation has been announced, with the formation of a high-level committee tasked with examining the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
The protests underscore a growing frustration among citizens, particularly young people, towards a government perceived as detached from the struggles of everyday life. Many are demanding not only justice for Nepali but also broader reforms addressing the treatment of ride-sharing drivers and vulnerable citizens in general.
