Mitchell Starc Shines as Australia Dominates Bangladesh in Second Test
The second Test match between Australia and Bangladesh kicked off at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay, producing a dramatic first day. Fast bowler Mitchell Starc delivered a remarkable performance, taking six wickets for just 12 runs, contributing to Bangladesh's total collapse.
Bangladesh was dismissed for a mere 64 runs in just 34 overs, marking the lowest score for a team batting first in Australia since 1932, when South Africa was bowled out for 36. Starc made history by achieving five wickets before lunch, a rare feat that underscores his prowess on the field.
Although Australia initially seized the advantage, a series of batting failures left them at 165 for 8 at stumps. In-form batter Cameron Green, who scored 104 in the first Test in Darwin, managed to remain unbeaten with 51 runs and provided some stability to the innings amid a flurry of wickets.
Shoriful Islam, Bangladesh's left-arm seamer who returned to the squad after recovering from a side strain, was instrumental with the ball as well. He achieved impressive figures of six wickets for 35 runs across 11 overs, marking his best innings performance in Test cricket.
The Australian top order struggled, with opener Matt Renshaw dismissed for eight runs in his first Test since 2023. Following him, No 3 Marnus Labuschagne's poor form continued, contributing only four runs before falling victim to a leg stump delivery.
Star Australian batter Steve Smith was also affected by Shoriful's bowling, being caught lbw for 42 runs after using a review that showed the ball marginally clipping the off stump. Australia captain Pat Cummins recorded figures of three for 25, aiding the pitch-influenced bowling attack.
The day was marked by extraordinary bowling conditions that benefitted pace bowlers, leading to 18 wickets falling on a single day. Starc's six-wicket haul was the sixth-fastest in Test history, falling short of his record of taking five wickets in just 15 deliveries against the West Indies last year. His performance brought his total Test wickets to 441, placing him tenth on the all-time list, surpassing South African legend Dale Steyn.
Australian captain Pat Cummins had opted to bowl first after winning the toss, and the decision paid off handsomely with Starc's explosive bowling display. The opening day concludes with Australia fairly secure, but their batting team will need to recover if they wish to build on their bowlers' strong start against a determined Bangladesh side.
