The new Mercedes-Benz GLC Electric hits the Indian market with a starting price of Rs 78.50 lakh, featuring impressive specifications and technology.

The Mercedes-Benz GLC Electric has officially been launched in India, with a starting price set at Rs 78.50 lakh (ex-showroom). This model marks Mercedes’ smallest electric vehicle (EV) available in the country, and it will be locally assembled at the automaker's facility located near Pune.

Initial bookings for the GLC Electric began in October 2023 and have already surged, surpassing 1,000 orders, with delivery commencing immediately. The vehicle currently available in India is the GLC 400, which is powered by a 94-kilowatt-hour battery. Mercedes claims that this battery offers a WLTP (Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure) range of 711 kilometres on a single charge.

Further enhancing its appeal, the GLC Electric features a dual-motor setup that delivers an impressive 482.4 brake horsepower (bhp) and 800 Newton-metres (Nm) of torque. This performance positions the GLC Electric as one of the most powerful SUVs in its segment. In terms of dimensions, it measures 4.85 metres in length and has a wheelbase of 2.97 metres, making it one of the largest vehicles within its class.

Key features of the GLC Electric include the MBUX Hyperscreen, a Burmester audio system with Dolby Atmos compatibility, ambient lighting, a panoramic glass roof, and massage and ventilation functions for front seats. Other notable aspects incorporate a full-LED lighting package, power-folding second-row seats, wireless charging pads, Level 2 advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), an auto-parking function, and a substantial boot capacity of 570 litres complemented by a 128-litre frunk.

Design-wise, the GLC Electric arrives in India equipped with an AMG design package. This includes an electric AMG grille, 20-inch AMG wheels, aluminium running boards, and connected tail lamps.

Looking ahead, the GLC Electric's primary competitor will be the BMW iX3 SUV, expected to launch in 2027. The BMW model is anticipated to parallel the GLC Electric in specifications, features, and interior space while likely also being assembled locally, thus igniting competition within India's expanding electric vehicle market.

As of now, some early adopters may encounter waiting periods, as the vehicle is reported to be sold out until March 2027. The introduction of the GLC Electric can be viewed as a significant step towards the expansion of Mercedes-Benz's EV portfolio in India, contributing to the growing interest in electric mobility in the region.
