Matthew Perry's Sister Speaks on Betrayal in New Netflix Documentary
New Delhi: In a new Netflix docuseries titled 'The One About Matthew Perry,' Mia Perry Bowick, sister of the late actor Matthew Perry, shares her feelings about betrayal following his tragic death. Perry, renowned for his role as Chandler Bing in the iconic television series 'Friends,' passed away on 28 October 2023 at the age of 54.
Close friend West Huddleston recalled Perry's unsettling remark: "It’s weird to be in a world where if I died, it would be shocking but not surprising." Huddleston reflected on the gravity of Perry's struggles and expressed that while his death was shocking, a part of him had been prepared for it.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner reported that Perry's death was primarily due to the acute effects of ketamine, with drowning and coronary artery disease also contributing factors. Perry was discovered unresponsive in the hot tub at his home. His longtime assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa, became a focal point in the investigation regarding the circumstances surrounding Perry's passing. Five individuals, including Iwamasa, were arrested in August 2024 in connection with the case.
Bowick spoke about the deep sense of betrayal felt by Perry's family and friends. "The level of betrayal we all felt," she said, underlining the shock that stemmed from the revelations around his death.
Huddleston also recounted a FaceTime conversation with Perry, during which the actor, who had faced extensive dental issues due to substance abuse, appeared to be missing teeth. Perry had spoken candidly in his memoir about the toll of his long battle with addiction, mentioning dental procedures he had undergone as a result.
Huddleston noted, "He knew that was going to put him back on opiates for pain. He was deathly afraid of that spiral again." However, he later observed Perry visiting a ketamine clinic to manage his pain after detoxification from pain medications. Initially skeptical about the use of ketamine to treat substance use disorders, Huddleston witnessed Perry's apparent improvements and positive outlook.
Bowick revealed that Perry once described a profound spiritual experience from his ketamine treatments. She stated, "He shared that he felt like he had a spiritual experience with ketamine, that he had seen that we have multiple lives, that he felt like he saw God." Huddleston echoed this sentiment, expressing that Perry seemed more hopeful in conversations about his recovery.
On the day of his death, Bowick was attending a conference in Denver and was largely disconnected from her phone. Upon turning it back on, she received the devastating news from her husband. "It’s your brother. He’s gone," he told her, leading to an initial disbelief. Bowick recalled her immediate reaction of denial before confirming the tragic news through a call with Robin Ruzan, a close friend of Perry's and co-executor of his estate.
Upon learning of the circumstances surrounding Perry's death, Bowick experienced confusion and heartbreak. "That was the first time that I had found out that he was doing extra ketamine on the side," she said.
As the identities of those arrested were disclosed, Bowick expressed a mix of emotions while conversing with her family. She mentioned grappling with the hope that Iwamasa was not one of them, highlighting her disappointment with his choices. "I felt duped, deeply, because the family all really liked him and really trusted him," she reflected.
Matthew Perry's legacy continues to resonate with fans. His candid discussions about addiction and the quest for sobriety have inspired many, and the revelations from his sister offer a poignant insight into the struggles faced by those close to him.
