Janhvi Kapoor Reflects on Objectification in 'Peddi' Controversy
Janhvi Kapoor, a prominent figure in Indian cinema, recently spoke candidly about the backlash surrounding her role in the sports drama 'Peddi' during an appearance on the chat show 'Koffee with Karan'. The film, released on June 4, faced criticism for the portrayal of Kapoor's character, Achiyamma, leading to significant discussions about objectification and sexualisation in contemporary cinema. Specifically, viewers raised concerns regarding how her character was introduced and presented, labelling some sequences as excessively focused on her physical appearance rather than character development.
During the episode, host Karan Johar addressed the controversy, noting its dual dimensions—some critics focused on the sexualisation of Kapoor's character, while others questioned her apparent lack of action against such portrayals on set. Kapoor expressed her inner conflict regarding the situation, acknowledging the hard work of the film's cast and crew. 'I didn't know what to say or if anything needed to be said,' she explained. However, she recognised that the narrative could have negative repercussions, particularly for women in society. 'This weighs heavily on my conscience, the sort of negative impact a narrative like that can have on our society. Specific to my gender... that shame I will always carry with me.'
The actress further admitted, 'Could I have done more? Could I have been more vigilant? A hundred per cent yes. Was it problematic, was it extreme objectification? Did it propagate sexual assault narratively? Yes.' Kapoor reflected on her experiences while filming, stating that often, the scripts in regional cinema do not clarify character angles or scenes, which made it difficult for her to advocate for changes. Despite her challenges, she emphasised the importance of taking ownership of the narrative presented on screen and asserted, 'I should have taken advantage of my privilege.'
This admission came after director Buchi Babu Sana publicly apologised for the controversial depiction of women in the film. In a statement posted on social media, he acknowledged the concerns raised by audiences and committed to making changes to the depicted scenes. He remarked, 'It was never our intention to objectify or disrespect any female character. If any part of the film has been perceived that way, we respect those sentiments and sincerely apologise.'
Both Kapoor and Sana's comments reflect a growing sensitivity within the Indian film industry regarding how women are portrayed on screen. This dialogue follows an increase in societal discussions about gender representation and objectification in film narratives. 'Peddi' serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenge filmmakers face in balancing creative expression with social responsibility, particularly in a cultural landscape that is evolving and increasingly outspoken about such issues.
