Israel Expands Offensive in Lebanon, Accusations of Collective Punishment
Israeli military escalates operations in Lebanon, prompting accusations of collective punishment from Lebanese officials amid ongoing US-Iran negotiations.

The Israeli military has intensified its operations in southern Lebanon, most notably seizing control of Beaufort Castle, a strategic site that overlooks the Litani valley. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the capture of the castle as a significant change in the ongoing military campaign against Hezbollah, stating, "We have broken the barrier of fear. We are taking the initiative, we are operating on all fronts - in Syria, in Gaza, in Lebanon." The heightened military activity has raised alarms as Israeli ground troops advance beyond the originally established demarcation line of the Litani river.

Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam has condemned Israel's actions, labelling them as “collective punishment.” He asserted that the Israeli military's operations have resulted in significant destruction across Lebanon, leading to civilian casualties and widespread displacement. Reports indicate that the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) have expanded the evacuation zones in southern Lebanon and have issued warnings for residents to leave areas near Hezbollah positions.

The ongoing conflict has seen at least 3,300 Lebanese fatalities since its onset, alongside reports of at least 25 deaths among Israeli military personnel. In addition to ground assaults, Israeli airstrikes have targeted various locations, including civilian facilities, raising concerns about humanitarian conditions in the region. Earlier this week, an airstrike near Hiram Hospital in Tyre resulted in injuries to hospital staff and significant building damage.

In light of the escalating violence, US diplomatic channels have expressed apprehension. Negotiations between the US and Iran regarding a potential deal appear to be stalled, with President Donald Trump indicating that he seeks tougher terms before proceeding further. This situation complicates discussions about the military conflict, further straining relations and complicating the prospect of peace.

As diplomatic efforts continue in Washington, both the US and Lebanese governments find themselves in a challenging position, with Hezbollah’s actions resulting in more attacks on Israeli territory. Observers caution that the continued violence will only deepen the humanitarian crisis already impacting countless civilians in Lebanon.

France has called for a United Nations Security Council meeting to discuss the escalating situation, with some officials viewing Israel's strategy as misguided and harmful to regional stability. Given the complicated geopolitical landscape, Lebanon's government struggles to navigate the ongoing conflict without further entanglement in this latest confrontation between Israel and Hezbollah.
