Indian Army Chief Speaks on Border Vigilance and CPEC Concerns
General Upendra Dwivedi addresses LAC vigilance and responds to China-Pakistan Economic Corridor plans at annual press conference.

In a recent press conference held on 13 January 2026, the Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi emphasised the necessity for sustained vigilance along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) amidst escalating tensions in the region. General Dwivedi's statements come at a time when military engagement and border issues between India and China remain critical.

The Indian Army has maintained a proactive stance regarding its operations along the LAC, a disputed border region between India and China. General Dwivedi underscored that factors such as geography and recent developments necessitate heightened awareness and readiness from Indian forces.

'We must constantly adapt and remain watchful,' General Dwivedi stated, stressing the importance of military preparedness. This caution is particularly relevant in light of China’s military developments and its strategic partnerships in the region.

Additionally, the General addressed concerns related to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a project that India has publicly opposed, deeming it a violation of its territorial integrity. The initiative, which aims to connect Gwadar Port in Pakistan to China’s Xinjiang region, has been a focal point of diplomatic tension.

'India firmly assesses that CPEC cannot be allowed to proceed unchecked,' General Dwivedi remarked, highlighting India’s unwavering stance on its sovereignty issues. The CPEC is seen as vital by Pakistan and China, fostering economic ties and infrastructure development. However, India’s objections arise primarily from the corridor's traversing of areas it claims as its own.

General Dwivedi’s comments reflect India’s ongoing diplomatic efforts to counteract what it perceives as encroachment on its borders. As the geopolitical landscape evolves, the Indian Army remains committed to safeguarding national interests.

The press conference concluded with an acknowledgment of the challenges ahead. General Dwivedi reiterated the Army’s commitment to protecting India's sovereignty and maintaining peace and stability in the region during these uncertain times.
