Indian Air Force Officers Convey Realism Expectations for Operation Safed Sagar
The new series 'Operation Safed Sagar' on Netflix has garnered significant acclaim for its portrayal of the Kargil War, focusing on the Indian Air Force's operations during this critical conflict. Co-creators Abhijeet Singh Parmar and Mehboob Pal Singh Brar discussed the show's commitment to realism and the feedback they received from actual Air Force officers.
The series, which highlights the IAF's Golden Arrows squadron, has been praised for its visual effects and the depth it brings to historical events. As co-producer Mehboob Pal Singh Brar explained, protecting the 'soul' of the narrative was a priority while exploring the vast details surrounding military life.
"The challenge was to maintain the emotional core while depicting the grandeur of aerial combat and military bases," he stated. Both creators were adamant about portraying the pilots authentically. They partnered with fighter pilots during their research phase, with Abhijeet recalling the consistent advice from officers: "Keep it real and authentic."
Specifically, Air Force officers expressed strong opinions about how they should not be depicted. Some senior officers told Abhijeet, "Do not show us coming down from the plane in a full hero mode, walking in slow motion. We hate it." This sentiment was prevalent among all the pilots they consulted, who emphasised the reality of their post-sortie experience, including physical exhaustion and a lack of glamour.
Abhijeet further explained, "When you step out of a MiG-21, you are fully sweaty. We aimed to show them as real individuals rather than cinematic heroes." This approach reflects a broader trend within the show, which seeks to remain grounded in authenticity rather than succumb to typical jingoistic tropes often found in war dramas.
Since its premiere on 7 August, the series has seen a surge in positive reviews, partly due to its refusal to add unnecessary dramatics or 'masala' that might detract from the story. As Abhijeet noted, displaying a sense of duty rather than overt heroism was crucial. He pointed out that the character Ajay Ahuja, played by actor Siddharth, was not meant to be heroic in the traditional sense but rather depicted as performing his duties amidst the conflict.
The creators were intentional about their storytelling choices, opting to include the perspectives of both Indian and Pakistani forces to offer a fuller picture of the conflict. This narrative strategy illustrates the complexities of the Kargil War, a subject that has often been too simplistically portrayed.
Practical aspects of the production were equally demanding, particularly in recreating the battle environment. The team opted for real locations rather than studio sets, ensuring that the depiction of snow-laden peaks was authentic. Mehboob commented on the importance of the physical setting, recounting their extensive preparations as they transported materials for the shoot.
The creators are hopeful that the authentic representation of both the emotional and physical challenges faced by Air Force personnel will resonate with audiences. 'Operation Safed Sagar' combines meticulous storytelling with an emphasis on truthfulness to deliver an engaging narrative, showcasing the dedication of those who serve under such intense circumstances. Currently streaming on Netflix, its unique approach sets it apart from typical war dramas.
