India and US Finalise ₹7,995 Crore Agreement for Navy Helicopters
The Indian Ministry of Defence has formalised a significant agreement with the United States for the sustainment of the Indian Navy's fleet of MH-60R helicopters. The deal, valued at approximately ₹7,995 crore, was sealed through Letters of Offer and Acceptance (LOAs) on 28 November 2025 in New Delhi. This initiative is expected to enhance the operational efficiency of the Navy's aviation capabilities over the next five years.
The agreement was signed under the US Foreign Military Sales programme, a framework that facilitates the sale of defence equipment and services to allied countries. Rajesh Kumar Singh, the Defence Secretary of India, was present during the signing ceremony.
The sustainment support package includes various elements crucial for the effective operation of the helicopters. These encompass the provision of spare parts, support equipment, comprehensive product support, and both training and technical assistance. Additionally, the contract includes the establishment of facilities for intermediate-level repairs and periodic maintenance inspections within India.
This development aligns with the Indian government's Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, which promotes self-reliance in defence manufacturing and reduces dependence on foreign suppliers. By developing indigenous support capabilities, India aims to build long-term operational capacity and foster local production through micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and other domestic firms.
The MH-60R helicopters, manufactured by Lockheed Martin and Sikorsky, are advanced multi-role aircraft equipped with capabilities for anti-submarine warfare as well as other operational roles. These helicopters, which are capable of functioning in all weather conditions, can operate effectively from various naval vessels, including frigates and aircraft carriers.
The Indian Navy originally ordered 24 of these helicopters in 2020, with a total contract value of around ₹17,500 crore. To date, 15 helicopters have been delivered, with the remaining units expected to arrive in the coming year. The sustainment support will significantly enhance the helicopters' availability and maintainability, ensuring they can perform optimally across a range of missions.
In a statement, the Ministry of Defence highlighted that this support will not only improve operational readiness but will also enable the helicopters to be deployed from various locations, thereby maximising their operational flexibility.
The Indian government continues to strengthen its defence ties with the United States, reflecting a broader strategy to modernise its military capabilities and enhance security cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.
