Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stresses the need for robust design skills in India's electronics sector amid global challenges.

New Delhi: During a recent event, Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, highlighted the necessity for Indian companies to enhance their design capabilities in response to rising geopolitical tensions and shifts in the global economy. He asserted that these improvements are essential for the electronic industry to thrive despite the current challenges.

The event celebrated the achievements of the Electronic Component Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS), which aims to boost domestic production of electronic components. Vaishnaw's comments came as part of a broader discussion on the future of India's electronics sector, which is increasingly viewed as a critical player in the global market.

"The evolving landscape of geopolitics and geoeconomics presents greater challenges, and it is our ability to manage the supply chain effectively that will determine our resilience and competitiveness during tough times," Vaishnaw stated.

He underscored that strong design capabilities are indispensable for manufacturers aiming to compete internationally. The minister encouraged firms to expand their sourcing from local suppliers and invest in their development to enhance the overall value chain.

Vaishnaw also noted that the Indian manufacturing sector has already achieved remarkable quality standards in industries such as automotive, aerospace, and pharmaceuticals, aligning with global benchmarks.

The government, he mentioned, is committed to ongoing engagement with the electronics sector and is working on a new skilling framework for electronics manufacturing in collaboration with organisations excelling in social initiatives. "We aim to establish a robust educational foundation that will equip our workforce with the necessary skills to meet industry demands," he added.

Pankaj Mohindroo, Chairman of the India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA), echoed Vaishnaw's sentiments, stating, "ECMS will anchor global value chains in India, create competitive Indian manufacturers in various product categories, and propel us towards our goal of USD 500 billion in electronics manufacturing. This marks a significant industrial evolution for our nation."

The ECMS continues to play a pivotal role in shaping the electronics landscape in India, fostering innovation and local production capabilities. As the country pushes forward in this sector, the focus on design, quality, and supply chain resilience will be crucial to achieving its ambitious targets.
