India Defeats Pakistan 5-3 at 2026 Hockey World Cup to Advance
India secures victory against Pakistan with a 5-3 scoreline, ensuring progression to the second round of the Hockey World Cup 2026.

India faced Pakistan on Wednesday at the Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen, Netherlands, securing a crucial victory with a scoreline of 5-3 in their final match of Pool D. This win allowed India to finish second in the pool, accumulating six points, while England topped the group with nine points from three victories.

Indian captain Harmanpreet Singh played a pivotal role in the match, netting two goals. He opened the scoring in the fourth minute with a penalty corner conversion. Abhishek soon doubled the lead in the tenth minute, scoring from a clever pass by Mandeep Singh. Harmanpreet increased India's advantage again in the 20th minute from another penalty corner.

Despite a strong start from India, Pakistan responded through Hannan Shahid, who found the back of the net after the Indian goalkeeper failed to secure a rebound. Following this, Abhishek extended India's lead to 4-1 with a bit of fortune, as the ball ricocheted off a defender’s stick. Sufyan Khan brought the score to 4-2 just before halftime with a well-executed drag-flick from a penalty corner.

The third quarter saw Hardik Singh convert a penalty stroke to make it 5-2. As the final quarter commenced, Pakistan managed to pull a goal back when Shahid scored his second goal after a defensive lapse from India.

The encounter became tense as India faced a yellow card issued to Aditya Lalage in the 55th minute, reducing them to ten players. Nevertheless, the Indian side maintained composure and effectively defended against Pakistan's attempts to equalise.

India's performance kept them in the semi-final contention, needing to secure a strong finish in the tournament. They had previously secured a 3-1 victory over Wales, which contributed to their current standing in Pool D. Pakistan's elimination means that they will now participate in the classification phase of the tournament.

With these results, India and England will face the Netherlands, with India also potentially facing either Argentina or New Zealand in the next round. This victory represents an important milestone for Indian hockey as they look to progress further in the competition.
