HCA Florida Healthcare Highlights Stroke Awareness Ahead of World Stroke Day
As World Stroke Day approaches, HCA Florida Healthcare stresses the importance of recognising stroke symptoms and seeking immediate care.

With World Stroke Day set for 29 October, HCA Florida Healthcare is encouraging residents of Central Florida to be vigilant in recognising the warning signs of a stroke. Dr. Gerard Deib, an interventional neuroradiologist from HCA Florida Lake Monroe Hospital, emphasises the need for immediate medical intervention when symptoms appear.

A stroke occurs suddenly and can result in significant damage if not treated promptly. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), stroke remains the third leading cause of death in Florida, with populations in Central and North Florida facing the highest mortality rates. For instance, data from the Florida Department of Health indicates that Orange County experienced a stroke death rate of 54.1 per 100,000 residents in 2024, while Seminole and Osceola Counties had rates of 66.63 and 67.75, respectively.

To aid recognition of stroke symptoms, Dr. Deib advocates the American Heart Association's simplified acronym, B.E. F.A.S.T., which stands for:

  • B - Face: Check if one side of the face is drooping.
  • E - Arm: Is there weakness or numbness in one arm?
  • F - Speech: Has there been a sudden change in speech clarity?
  • A - Time: Seek emergency medical assistance without delay.

"Recognising these symptoms is vital for individuals of all ages," said Dr. Deib. "The sooner someone receives treatment, the better their chances of recovery."

HCA Florida Healthcare operates two Comprehensive Stroke Centres, specifically designed to provide specialised and rapid care for stroke patients. Facilities like HCA Florida Lake Monroe Hospital aim to evaluate and treat patients quickly, with emergency care teams trained to manage stroke symptoms and coordinate care.

In 2025, HCA Healthcare achieved a median door-to-needle time of 33 minutes, significantly quicker than the American Heart Association's target of 60 minutes for administering necessary clot-dissolving treatments. This efficiency is critical, as every minute without treatment can contribute to further brain injury.

In addition to emergency services, HCA Florida Healthcare operates five hospitals and 17 freestanding emergency rooms throughout Central Florida, focused on delivering immediate care to stroke patients. HCA Florida Lake Monroe Hospital, for instance, is a Level II Trauma Centre, providing a comprehensive range of emergency services, including advanced cardiovascular programmes and rehabilitation options.

The hospital's efforts are part of a broader initiative by HCA Florida Healthcare to enhance access to specialised care across the state. This healthcare network consists of over 670 locations and serves 12.8 million patients annually, showcasing its commitment to enhancing healthcare delivery and clinical outcomes.

As World Stroke Day approaches, the overarching message remains clear: recognising the symptoms of stroke and acting immediately can significantly influence recovery and health outcomes for those affected.
