Gold Prices Reach Two-Month High Amidst Fed Rate Speculation
Spot gold and silver prices have experienced an uptick during late-afternoon trading in the United States on Wednesday, following the release of a cooler Consumer Price Index (CPI) report for July. This report helped lower expectations for an interest rate increase from the Federal Reserve in September, subsequently easing Treasury yields.
As of the latest data, spot gold is priced at approximately $4,406.20 per ounce, marking an increase of 0.90%. Similarly, spot silver is trading at about $65.140, reflecting a gain of 0.89% for the session.
In North America, equity markets generally finished higher, with the S&P 500 climbing by 20.30 points, or 0.3%, reaching 7,748.50. The Nasdaq Composite gained 143.04 points, translating to a rise of 0.5%, closing at 26,588.49. Conversely, the Dow Jones Industrial Average recorded a minor decline of 21.58 points, less than 0.1%, settling at 53,770.27. The Russell 2000 index increased by 18.37 points, or 0.6%, to reach 3,045.48.
In European markets, however, the CAC 40 Index fell by 0.46% to 8,674.94, while the DAX decreased by 0.17% to 26,346. The FTSE 100 observed a slight decline of 0.10% to 10,833, and the Euro Stoxx 50 fell by 0.24% to 6,535.
The shifts in market positioning appear to support a hold from the Federal Reserve following the CPI release. The headline CPI rose by 0.1% in July and is up 3.4% year-on-year. Core CPI saw a monthly increase of 0.2% and an annual rise of 2.5%. The likelihood of a rate hike in September has fallen to approximately 40%, down from roughly 48% recorded the previous day, as the yield on the 10-year Treasury bond settled near 4.68% and the two-year yield dropped towards 4.20%.
This economic data has contributed positively to both equities and precious metals, although concerns regarding energy-linked inflation risks continue to challenge the potential for a complete elimination of further rate hikes this year. Notably, the Strait of Hormuz remains a focal point for geopolitical concerns that may influence oil prices, inflation expectations, and defensive demand.
Discussions between the U.S. and Iran have yet to yield a deal regarding the reopening of the Strait, a crucial maritime route for oil. Iran’s top security official has indicated that reopening is contingent on certain U.S. conditions, including the issue of frozen assets and regional conflicts.
Additionally, the International Energy Agency has warned that the buffers of available inventories are depleting rapidly and has revised down its supply estimates for the remainder of this year.
For gold, the technical landscape appears two-sided: while lower yields typically bolster interest in non-yielding metals like gold, ongoing tensions related to shipping through the Gulf region keep oil prices elevated, complicating expectations around potential relief from Federal Reserve rate hikes.
Key external markets show Nymex West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil trading around $83.20 per barrel, with Brent crude priced near $88.92. The U.S. dollar index has strengthened in late trading after reversing its earlier decline following the CPI report.
Technical analysis indicates that gold bulls are targeting a price recovery above the resistance levels between $4,430.00 and $4,492.00, with a sustained movement potentially aiming for $4,500.00 and $4,598.48. Conversely, bears have their eyes set on a downside target of breaking below $4,360.00, with further targets at $4,299.00 and $4,224.00.
For silver, bulls aim to push prices back above $66.495, with potential upward targets at $71.38 and $74.63. The downside objectives for bears include a break below $64.00, which could lead to targets of $63.11 and $60.83. Initial resistance for silver is established at $66.495 and then $71.38, while immediate support is noted at $64.00 and $63.11.
In conclusion, while recent inflation data has provided a boost to precious metals, the prevailing geopolitical and economic uncertainties continue to exert influence over market dynamics.
