Gautam Gambhir Aims to Propel India Ahead in T20I Format
Gautam Gambhir, the former Indian opening batter, has taken the reins as head coach of the national team following their triumphant T20 World Cup campaign in 2024. Under his leadership, the Indian team has experienced notable successes in the shortest format of the game, boasting an impressive record of 26 wins and only four losses since their title victory. This includes securing seven T20 International series wins, with the most recent triumph being against Australia.
The team's remarkable performances are particularly encouraging as they gear up to defend their title in the upcoming T20 World Cup, scheduled to be hosted in India. Gambhir, in a recent interview on the Board of Control for Cricket in India's official platform, emphasised the significance of having a flexible batting order, a strategy he believes is crucial for success in T20 cricket.
He stated, "That (fluid batting order) has been the ideology from day one when I took over as the head coach. From Sri Lanka till now, it hasnāt changed."
Gambhir further elaborated on his perspective regarding batting line-ups, suggesting that they are often overrated, except for the openers. "The two openers are permanent, but everything else shuffles. In T20 cricket, itās not just the runs that matter; itās the impact that counts."
The head coach highlighted the teamās collective goals, focusing on the overall performance rather than individual statistics. He remarked, "We donāt want to play the game thinking about averages and strike rates; we are thinking about how much impact a person can create in what situation."
Gambhir acknowledged the evolving nature of T20 cricket and stressed the importance of adaptability for coaches and players alike. "T20 cricket will evolve, and as coaches, if we donāt evolve, we will be behind the eight ball. We want to be ahead of T20 cricket, and that is what the young boys have adapted. Hopefully, they continue to adapt and evolve in the future. It is high risk, high reward. We want this team to be fearless but smart as well."
The former cricketer also pointed out India's all-round capabilities, which provide the team with a significant advantage across various playing conditions. He mentioned players like Axar Patel and Washington Sundar, who excel both with bat and ball, stating, "They can get into the side purely as a batter as well, thatās how good they are as a batter. It is a great luxury to have, and I think they will play a very, very important role come the World Cup."
Looking ahead, Gambhir expressed optimism about the team's progress but acknowledged that there is still work to be done. He concluded, "But we are still not where we want to be in three months down the line for the World Cup; hopefully, we will be there."
