Flávio Bolsonaro Reportedly Flees Brazil Following Election Defeat
Flávio Bolsonaro has reportedly departed for the United States after his election loss to Lula, raising political tensions in Brazil.

Flávio Bolsonaro, the far-right senator and son of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, has reportedly fled Brazil and is en route to the United States. This follows his defeat in the presidential election to the left-wing incumbent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, held on Sunday. Lula described Flávio Bolsonaro's act of leaving as "shameful".

A report by the news outlet Metrópoles, citing sources close to Flávio Bolsonaro's family, indicates that he is expected to land in Florida on Tuesday afternoon and intends to seek political asylum. The report confirmed that allies of Bolsonaro had informed them that "the plane is in flight," although its departure point was not specified.

In an event celebrating his 81st birthday, Lula commented on Flávio Bolsonaro's decision, suggesting it reflects a pattern within the Bolsonaro family: "Brazil is their second homeland. Their first homeland is licking the boots of the US." He continued, questioning the mindset of someone who flees after losing an election, stating, "A citizen who sneaks out of his country owes something. The act of leaving Brazil is shameful."

According to lawmakers from Lula's Workers' Party, there are efforts to have Flávio Bolsonaro arrested. They have requested that the Brazilian Supreme Court place his name on Interpol's Red Notice list, following his failure to surrender his passport by a Tuesday morning deadline.

Reports indicate that Flávio Bolsonaro has not been seen since Monday, leading to speculation about his departure after facing electoral defeat. After a Supreme Court justice revoked his passport minutes following the election results, Bolsonaro allegedly expressed concerns about possible arrest during a meeting with friends and legal advisors.

Flávio Bolsonaro has been an Italian citizen since 2023 and reportedly holds an Italian passport. On Monday night, he was reportedly planning to flee to Argentina to board a private jet to the United States; however, those plans reportedly changed shortly after news of his intended departure emerged. Subsequently, there was no confirmation of his passage through regular immigration checkpoints in Brazil, prompting federal police to liaise with Argentinian authorities.

An Argentinian news outlet reported that Flávio Bolsonaro crossed the border into Argentina on foot but abandoned his planned flight to the US. Reports suggest that his escape plan was facilitated by a lawyer close to the family.

The senator is embroiled in a criminal investigation concerning allegations of money laundering linked to a £680 million ($905 million) scheme involving betting companies. His potential flight complicates an already tense political landscape, with the Bolsonaro family's influence now under scrutiny.

Jair Bolsonaro is currently under house arrest for alleged coup attempts, while one of his other sons remains in self-imposed exile in the US. The political situation raises questions about the future of the far-right in Brazil, with some analysts suggesting an impending power vacuum may occur following their exit. Political scientist Magna Inácio highlighted that the recent electoral loss reflects Brazilian voters' resistance to the far-right.

As Flávio Bolsonaro is reported to be fleeing to the US, observers in Brazil are keenly watching how the developments may reshape the political landscape following this latest chapter in Brazilian politics.
