East Bengal Draw with Mohun Bagan, Maintains Lead in ISL Standings
The Kolkata Derby showcased another thrilling encounter as Mohun Bagan Super Giant and East Bengal FC ended in a 1-1 stalemate during their Indian Super League (ISL) match at the Salt Lake Stadium on Sunday, 17 May 2026. This tie leaves East Bengal in a strong position in the title race, sitting atop the standings.
Edmund Lalrindika scored the opening goal for East Bengal in the 85th minute, only for Jason Cummings to equalise for Mohun Bagan just five minutes later. Both teams now have accumulated 23 points from 12 matches, but East Bengal leads due to a superior goal difference.
With Mumbai City FC and Punjab FC also competing closely, the title race remains uncertain. Mumbai City FC and Punjab FC are on 22 points and will compete against each other on 21 May.
For East Bengal to secure the ISL title, they must win their final match against Inter Kashi, provided that Mohun Bagan does not surpass them in goal difference.
The Kolkata derby has seen 349 meetings, with East Bengal holding a narrow lead in their historical rivalry, having achieved 129 victories to Mohun Bagan's 105, with 115 matches ending in draws. East Bengal has netted 324 goals in these encounters compared to Mohun Bagan's 286. Their previous clash had finished in a goalless draw during the Super Cup on 31 October 2025.
Both sides entered the match with aggressive strategies. Mohun Bagan created the first real opportunity in the fourth minute when Liston Colaco set up Sahal Abdul Samad, whose poorly executed first touch denied them a goal. East Bengal responded swiftly; goalkeeper Prabhsukhan Singh Gill's long kick found PV Vishnu, who nearly got through but was halted by a last-minute tackle.
The game offered relentless action, with East Bengal's Anton Sojberg striking the post in the 14th minute. As play continued to unfold, both teams struggled for control, with East Bengal's Jeakson Singh and Mohun Bagan's Anirudh Thapa both attempting to break the deadlock, to no avail.
Going into the second half, the tempo remained acute. Numerous chances were squandered until Lalrindika fulfilled expectations by converting a through ball from Miguel. However, the joy was short-lived as Mohun Bagan, through Cummings, capitalised on a corner to level the score.
In a contentious finish, Lalrindika received a second yellow card in stoppage time, and Mohun Bagan nearly snatched a last-gasp winner, only to be denied by Gill's vital save. The match, marked by intensity and dramatic moments, reinforced the fierce rivalry between the two Kolkata giants, cementing their longstanding history in Indian football.
