Cultural Insights from Kolkata Woman's Experience in Chennai Office
A Kolkata woman's observations on her North Indian colleagues in Chennai spark discussions on cultural diversity and ignorance in India.

A woman from Kolkata has shared her observations regarding cultural differences after joining a central government office in Chennai, primarily staffed by colleagues from North India. Her experiences have sparked considerable discussion on social media, particularly on Reddit, highlighting the varying perceptions of cultural diversity within India.

Upon starting her new role, the woman expected to encounter a rich tapestry of languages and traditions. However, she soon found herself surprised by the stark differences in worldview between herself and her North Indian colleagues. In a post titled, "I don’t want to generalise but the people of the Hindi-speaking belt truly live in a world of their own," she described her encounters with what she perceived as casual casteism and sexism, as well as a lack of understanding regarding regional cultures.

One notable incident she recounted involved a colleague from Ghaziabad who innocently inquired, "Do you guys speak in Bengali at home too?" The woman was taken aback by this question, as it demonstrated a general lack of awareness about India's linguistic diversity. "I thought everyone in India knew Hindi and spoke in Hindi," the colleague remarked, which left the woman questioning how such misconceptions could exist among educated individuals.

The woman also mentioned her colleagues' bewilderment at her decision to skip celebrations for Diwali in favour of returning home for the Durga Pujo festival, which holds significant cultural importance for Bengalis. "They didn't understand that Durga Pujo can be somehow more important for a Bengali than Diwali," she stated, echoing her colleagues' astonishment when she explained her cultural priorities.

Her post resonated with many users online, prompting them to share their own experiences of cultural misunderstanding. Comments ranged from reflections on ignorance rooted in limited exposure to discussions about the importance of embracing India's vast cultural diversity. One user noted, "More than being conservative, it's about being ignorant because of less exposure and living in a bubble."

Another commenter expressed similar frustrations, stating, "I was once asked by a Haryanvi girl why South Indians are weak in Hindi." This sentiment was echoed by others who highlighted the prevalence of stereotypes that persist based on limited interactions with diverse cultures.

In conclusion, the woman’s experiences have sparked a broader conversation about cultural awareness and the need for greater understanding among India's diverse populations. As discussions continue, it is clear that the journey towards recognising and appreciating cultural differences is ongoing, especially within professional environments.

As she pondered the situation, the woman questioned, "What I don’t understand is how these people become adults without knowing that people who speak, eat, wear different things exist?" Her observations serve as a reminder of the importance of cultural sensitivity and awareness in fostering a more inclusive society.
