Congress Luncheon Absence Raises Questions Within I.N.D.I.A. Bloc
Samajwadi Party's absence from Congress luncheon invites discussion, yet I.N.D.I.A. bloc protests at Jantar Mantar continue amid communication issues.

In New Delhi, a communication misstep regarding a lunch invitation from Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge led to the Samajwadi Party (SP) missing a key gathering. The event, held at the Sagar Ratna restaurant on Janpath, generated some discord within the opposition I.N.D.I.A. bloc, though it did not hinder a planned protest march to Jantar Mantar on Wednesday.

The SP's absence raised eyebrows, particularly as the march had been organised in response to concerns regarding the continued tenure of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar following 'vote chori' accusations. It is reported that a delegation of 15 opposition leaders, including prominent figures like Rahul Gandhi of the Congress party, sought a meeting with President Droupadi Murmu before the deadline of October 9. However, the Rashtrapati Bhavan requested that the group be reduced to 10, a proposal that the I.N.D.I.A. bloc has decided to accept.

If the meeting is sanctioned, attendees would likely include Kharge, Gandhi, and Mamata Banerjee, the leader of the Trinamool Congress. Amidst the ongoing discussions, there was a determination to proceed with protests, prompting the opposition to march to the Election Commission before finalising Jantar Mantar as the protest location, symbolically reclaiming it for demonstrated dissent after it had been deemed inaccessible for protesters.

Trinamool Congress member Derek O'Brien commented on the situation, stating, “No big deal. There was a minor miscommunication on a WhatsApp message. All good - in the spirit of I.N.D.I.A.” This sentiment reflects an attempt to downplay the situation amidst rising tensions.

Despite the spat of confusion, the opposition remained steadfast in their intention to mobilise supporters. Reports indicated that prior to the lunchtime gathering, the leaders discussed logistics for the march, including options for how to proceed should police intervene. Although three buses were prepared for transportation, police intervention ultimately thwarted their advance.

As the situation unfolded, leaders such as Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Mahua Moitra, and Rahul Gandhi engaged in an act of civil resistance by lying down in the road in protest against police actions, which resulted in the detention of several members of Parliament (MPs). Images capturing the aftermath displayed Mahua Moitra with visible bruises, highlighting the unfolding events' intensity.

Following their apprehension, a scene of high drama occurred at Barakhamba Road Police Station, where leaders sought access to detained colleagues but faced obstacles. After considerable protest from officials including Chief Ministers A. Revanth Reddy and V.D. Satheesan, access was eventually granted, although some MPs remained barred from entering. O'Brien voiced his frustrations to law enforcement regarding his inability to file a complaint concerning the Election Commission.

Despite the initial tensions surrounding the lunchtime absence, I.N.D.I.A. bloc leaders have made strides in regrouping and strategising for the ongoing demonstrations, maintaining unity against their political adversaries.
