Congress Criticises BJP Government Over Accountability Issues
Indian National Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has voiced strong criticism against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government, alleging it has failed its first test of accountability by not seeking the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. This statement comes in light of recent irregularities in various examination processes, particularly concerning the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET).
In a statement released on social media, Kharge accused the government of blocking access to the Telegram messaging app in preparation for the upcoming NEET re-examination on June 21. He suggested such actions were indicative of the administration’s failure to address the root causes of examination fraud.
"The Modi government has temporarily blocked Telegram for the NEET exam re-test. Modi ji should first demand the resignation of his Education Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, who has blocked the futures of millions of youth," he said.
Kharge further pointed out that over the past decade, an alarming number of examination paper leaks have occurred, impacting about 90 cases and affecting millions of students. He remarked, "How long will this government keep covering up its failures?"
He highlighted the tragic consequences of these irregularities, stating that nearly six young individuals have reportedly taken their own lives due to the pressure and despair stemming from these examination issues. Kharge emphasised that countless families have struggled financially, often taking loans to prepare their children for competitive examinations, only to be faced with leaks and scandals.
In his remarks, Kharge drew attention to the integrity of examinations conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), alleging that even these respected institutions have faced serious allegations of malpractice. He stated, "The unfortunate thing is that the BJP has completely failed this exam."
The Congress party is intensifying efforts to hold the government accountable, with plans for Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to mobilise student support against the current administration's handling of exam integrity. Gandhi is scheduled to address student conventions, starting with an event in Kota on June 17.
He reiterated the party's demand for Pradhan’s resignation, suggesting that addressing this issue was crucial for restoring faith in the educational system. Kharge stated, "The country's aware youth is demanding just one thing: the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan, which has become the first test of accountability."
While the backdrop of academic integrity continues to pose significant concerns for the Indian education system, the political discourse surrounding this issue is likely to intensify as the NEET re-examination approaches.
