BMC Removes Dia Mirza's Diwali Video Following Political Backlash
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) recently removed a video promoting a pollution-free Diwali that featured Indian actress Dia Mirza. The decision came after objections from local leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), who claimed that the video was anti-Hindu.
Dia Mirza, a well-known advocate for environmental issues, had posted the video aimed at raising awareness about pollution during the Diwali festival. Diwali, which is celebrated by millions in India and around the world, often sees significant increases in air pollution due to the use of fireworks. In her video, Mirza urged viewers to celebrate the festival responsibly and advocated for environmentally friendly celebrations.
The BJP's criticism led to the BMC's swift action to remove the video. Mumbai Mayor and BJP member, as reported by The Times of India, expressed that Mirza had always been against Hindu traditions, implying that her message was politically motivated rather than genuine environmental concern.
In response to the backlash and the removal of the video, Dia Mirza expressed her disappointment. She emphasised that her message was intended to promote health and well-being and not to insult any cultural or religious practices.
Mirza remains vocal about environmental issues, using her platform to encourage sustainable practices and awareness. She stated, "My aim has always been to give back to the planet and promote a green future."
This incident highlights the ongoing tensions between politics and social advocacy in India, particularly in the realm of environmental issues. As environmental concerns become more prominent globally, public figures like Dia Mirza play a crucial role in raising awareness, often facing pushback from political entities.
The removal of the video serves as a reminder of the complexities involved in discussing sensitive topics within the politically charged climate of India, where issues of faith and tradition intersect with urgent environmental challenges.
