BJP Releases Candidate List for Assam Elections, Including Bordoloi
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has unveiled its initial roster of 88 candidates for the forthcoming Assam assembly elections. Among these candidates, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is set to contest from the Jalukbari constituency. Notably, Pradyut Bordoloi, a former Congress member, has joined the BJP and will represent the Dispur seat. Bordoloi, currently the Member of Parliament for Nagaon, officially switched parties in a public event attended by Chief Minister Sarma. This move came shortly after Bordoloi’s resignation from the Congress, wherein he voiced issues related to feeling sidelined and disrespected within the party.
In his resignation statement, Bordoloi expressed a long-standing loyalty to the Congress, having joined at the age of 16, yet indicated that recent experiences had compelled him to seek a new path. He remarked, "I have joined the BJP to do something better for the people of Assam. I feel I will be able to offer my services to the party and help make Assam one of the best states in the country."
The decision for Bordoloi to align with the BJP has attracted mixed reactions. Assam Congress President Gaurav Gogoi referred to the resignation as unfortunate but acknowledged it as a personal choice. He pointed out that Congress had previously supported Bordoloi's ambitions, including endorsing members of his family for candidacy in the current election cycle. "We view his decision as unfortunate. The Congress gave him a ticket in the last Lok Sabha election," Gogoi commented during a recent interaction in Dibrugarh.
The BJP's candidate list also includes several other former Congress members who have defected, highlighting a trend of political realignment ahead of the elections. The list features candidates across various constituencies, including those representing additional parties that have allied with the BJP for these elections.
Among the women nominees in the BJP's assembly list, six new candidates have been introduced, while two existing ministers are seeking re-election. Chief Minister Sarma announced that their political allies, Asom Gana Parishad and Bodoland People's Front, will also contest a selection of seats, although their specific candidates have yet to be named. As the election date approaches, the political landscape in Assam appears increasingly competitive, with key figures reshuffling in response to shifting allegiances and voter expectations.
