BJP Criticises Mamata Banerjee Amid Kolkata Earthquake Tremors
Kolkata experienced significant tremors on Friday, following an earthquake that struck Bangladesh, prompting a political response from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in West Bengal. The local BJP unit took the opportunity to criticise Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, questioning whether the seismic activity was a result of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process currently underway in the state.
In a post on social media, the West Bengal BJP remarked, "West Bengal just felt earthquake tremors. Mamata Banerjee, was it because of SIR?" This comment appeared to mock Banerjee's previous assertions that the SIR process has resulted in chaos across the state, even suggesting a connection between the voter roll revision and several reported suicides.
The tensions between the West Bengal Chief Minister and the BJP have escalated as both sides engage in a heated exchange regarding the SIR exercise. On Thursday, Banerjee addressed a letter to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, urging an immediate cessation of the electoral roll revision, which she characterised as "chaotic, coercive and dangerous."
Banerjee stated that the SIR process had reached a "deeply alarming stage," alleging that it was being conducted in an "unplanned and dangerous" manner that had "crippled the system from day one." She accused the Election Commission of imposing the SIR upon officials and citizens without adequate preparation, citing critical gaps in training and confusion surrounding necessary documentation.
The Chief Minister highlighted the challenges faced by Booth Level Officers (BLOs) in reaching voters amid their daily responsibilities, saying, "If this path is not corrected without delay, the consequences for the system, the officials and the citizens will be irreversible." She emphasised the need for "responsibility, humanity and decisive corrective action" to address the situation.
In response, the BJP dismissed Banerjee's claims as an attempt to halt a lawful process. The party accused her of resorting to theatrics to protect a voter base they allege was formed in a fraudulent manner. The BJP's stance is that Banerjee's opposition to the SIR process stems from her desire to maintain her political position.
The Trinamool Congress, Banerjee's party, has reported a troubling number of recent deaths attributed to the stress related to the SIR process, including at least 30 individuals who have died by suicide or heart attack due to fears of losing their voting rights. Among these are two Booth Level Officers who reportedly took their own lives, highlighting the human cost of the electoral revision exercise.
As the situation unfolds, the focus remains on the impact of the SIR process on both the electoral system in West Bengal and the individuals tasked with its implementation. The Chief Minister's call for a halt to the process underscores the urgent need for a reassessment of how electoral roll revisions are managed in the state, especially in light of the ongoing political tensions and public concerns about voter disenfranchisement.
