Andhra Pradesh Considers Social Media Ban for Under-16s
The government of Andhra Pradesh is evaluating the implementation of a ban on social media usage for individuals under the age of 16, following similar measures initiated in Australia. Nara Lokesh, the Information Technology Minister of Andhra Pradesh, discussed this proposal during the World Economic Forum (WEF) held in Davos. He explained that many young users lack the maturity to comprehend the content they encounter on various social media platforms.
Lokesh emphasised that the need for robust legal guidance to regulate young people's access to social media is increasingly critical in today’s digital landscape. The proposed ban aligns with international trends, where several countries are considering ways to protect minors from inappropriate online content.
As reported by Bloomberg, Lokesh stated, 'I believe we need to ensure safer online environments for our children.' This reflects a growing concern among policymakers regarding the impact of social media on youth mental health and development.
Since Australia’s recent actions have stirred discussions globally, Andhra Pradesh may adopt similar standards to address these concerns. The minister’s comments resonate with a broader narrative advocating for the protection of younger generations from potential online harms, such as cyberbullying and exposure to unsuitable material.
In a broader context, the proposed legislation could signal a shift towards greater regulation of social media platforms, especially concerning their influence on vulnerable demographics. The outcome of this initiative could have significant implications for both users in India and social media companies, setting a precedent for digital safety measures.
