Alex Marquez Secures Pole Position at 2026 Malaysian MotoGP
The 2026 Malaysian MotoGP qualifying session at Sepang witnessed Alex Marquez achieving a notable pole position, outperforming his brother, Marc Marquez. This event marked the 19th round of the season, which comprises 22 races.
Joining Alex Marquez on the front row is Pedro Acosta, representing KTM, while Ai Ogura and Marco Bezzecchi, both riding Aprilia bikes, secured fourth and fifth positions, respectively.
In a significant development, Jorge Martin, who was competing despite a broken wrist, officially withdrew after the final practice session held on Saturday morning. The team issued a statement confirming Martin’s withdrawal to allow him to focus on recovery: "Jorge Martin will withdraw from the remainder of the Malaysian GP to continue his recovery from injury."
Enea Bastianini, a rookie, surprised many by leading the final practice session, although he, like Alex Marquez, achieved his best time during a dummy qualifying run with new soft tyres towards the end of the session. Meanwhile, the experienced Marco Bezzecchi and Ai Ogura demonstrated a strong performance on used tyres, highlighting the ongoing competitiveness of the Aprilia team.
Despite leading the championship standings, Marc Marquez faced challenges and finished the session in 13th place. His rival, Jorge Martin, had a tumultuous weekend; he suffered a fractured wrist while battling for victory at the previous race in Phillip Island, which has interrupted his title campaign.
Martin had attempted to compete at Sepang despite his injury, returning for FP2 but ultimately decided to withdraw after only a few laps. The situation was carefully considered by the team and medical staff, who collectively agreed that it would be best not to take any risks with his condition.
Additively, Raul Fernandez, another rider, withdrew from the event due to a recent finger injury. Marco Bezzecchi is positioned 50 points behind in the championship and stands as Aprilia's best hope in challenging the dominant Ducatis.
Historical context from past seasons indicates that Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez enjoyed victories in Sepang previously, showcasing the circuit's propensity for Ducati success. With Marc Marquez now leading the championship by a mere ten points over the injured Martin, the stakes are high as the teams prepare for the race.
The Sepang International Circuit continues to be a significant venue for MotoGP, with challenges surrounding the track surface drawing attention from various riders within the paddock. The excitement ahead of the race, combined with the current developments, promises an engaging event for fans and team members alike.
