Ahmedabad confirmed as host for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, aiming to avoid past mistakes. Organisers pledge a well-prepared event for athletes.

Ahmedabad has been officially selected to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, promising to avoid the pitfalls experienced during the 2010 Delhi Games. The announcement came during the Commonwealth Sport's general assembly held in Glasgow, where Ahmedabad was chosen over a competing bid from Abuja, Nigeria.

Organisers have indicated that the event will feature between 15 and 17 sports, an increase from the 10 sports set to take place at the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow next summer. Among the sports expected to be included are athletics, swimming, table tennis, bowls, and netball, with a provisional list also considering Twenty20 cricket and triathlon. The final selection of sports is set to begin next month.

The decision to host the Games in Ahmedabad reflects India's ambitions to demonstrate its capability in managing large-scale sporting events, particularly as the nation aims to secure the 2036 Summer Olympics. Officials are eager to establish that the Commonwealth Games in Gujarat can be executed smoothly, learning from the challenges faced in 2010.

The 2010 Commonwealth Games were marred by a series of controversies, including poor ticket sales, last-minute venue preparations, and safety concerns. Reports highlighted issues such as murky swimming pool water, a malfunctioning security barrier that injured Uganda’s chef de mission, and even the presence of cobras in the athletes’ village. These incidents led to significant criticism and negative headlines surrounding the event.

Shri Ashwini Kumar, the principal sports secretary for Gujarat, acknowledged the difficulties faced during the 2010 Games but expressed confidence in the preparations for the upcoming event. "The 2010 Games were one of the best Games that were hosted. But there were some challenges. This time, we are well prepared. The organising committee is going to be established within a month or so, and our fundamentals are very strong. Most of the venues are already ready. The funding has been secured, and the budgets have been very meticulously worked out. We are very confident that we will deliver a Games which you will remember in years to come," he stated.

The sentiment of confidence was echoed by Dr PT Usha, president of the Commonwealth Games Association of India. She emphasised that the 2030 Games would not only celebrate a century of the Commonwealth movement but also lay the groundwork for the future of the event. "It will bring together athletes, communities, and cultures from across the Commonwealth in a spirit of friendship and progress," she added.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his delight at the announcement, stating that this achievement underscores India's commitment to sportsmanship and its position on the global sporting stage. In a message posted on social media platform X, he congratulated the nation and highlighted the importance of the Games in fostering international camaraderie. "It is our collective commitment and spirit of sportsmanship that has placed India firmly on the global sporting map. With the ethos of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, we are eager to be celebrating these historic games with great enthusiasm," he wrote.

The upcoming Commonwealth Games will mark the first time India has hosted the event since the 2010 Games in Delhi, and organisers are determined to ensure that the legacy of the 2030 Games is one of success and inclusivity, establishing a benchmark for future sporting events in the country.
