Zepto introduces zero handling fees and lower delivery costs, enhancing competition in India's quick commerce market against Blinkit and Instamart.

In a significant shift within the quick commerce sector in India, Zepto has announced the removal of handling fees and surge charges on all orders. The company has also reduced the minimum order value for free delivery to ₹99, placing it in a more competitive position against rivals Blinkit and Swiggy Instamart.

New Pricing Strategy

Zepto's latest initiative, labelled the 'All New Zepto Experience', allows customers to enjoy complete fee waivers. This includes zero handling fees and no additional charges for surge or rainfall, a feature that is now applicable to every order. As part of its revamped pricing model, customers placing orders below ₹99 will incur a ₹30 delivery fee, but there will be no other charges, including small cart fees or handling surcharges.

Previously, Zepto implemented a handling fee of ₹2 to cover the management of products ordered, a move now entirely abandoned in its bid for greater market share.

Comparative Analysis

This latest change by Zepto marks it as the only major player in the quick commerce sector currently offering such favourable pricing. In contrast, competitors like Blinkit and Swiggy Instamart continue to levy various fees. For instance, Blinkit imposes handling charges of ₹4 along with a ₹30 delivery fee on orders below ₹99, resulting in a minimum effective fee total of ₹54. Similarly, Instamart’s charges include a ₹30 delivery fee alongside ₹9.8 handling charges, bringing the total to approximately ₹65 for orders in the same price bracket.

Free Delivery Thresholds

Under the new parameters, Zepto's ₹99 threshold for free delivery stands out as the lowest among its competitors. Blinkit and Instamart require orders to exceed ₹199 for free delivery, making Zepto's offering particularly appealing to consumers.

Price Comparison on Essentials

To illustrate the financial impact of these changes, a price comparison for a standard item—a 500 ml milk pouch—across the three platforms was conducted. All three platforms list the milk pouch at ₹29, but the total price post-delivery and handling fees sets them apart. On Blinkit, the overall cost climbs to ₹88, while Instamart charges ₹94 for the same item. Zepto, in contrast, presents a much lower total cost of ₹59, significantly enhancing its attractiveness to consumers.

Market Dynamics and Investor Confidence

Zepto's strategic manoeuvre to eliminate fees comes in the wake of securing $450 million in funding, boosting its valuation to $7 billion. The funding round included participation from notable investors, such as the California Public Employees' Retirement System and various venture capital firms.

Industry experts suggest that this pricing strategy is primarily driven by the need to quickly grow Zepto's market presence amid an increasingly competitive landscape for quick delivery services. However, questions remain regarding the long-term sustainability of a zero-fee model, especially in a market where profitability remains an ongoing challenge.

Conclusion

As Zepto positions itself as a leader in the quick commerce industry, the immediate benefit of its new pricing strategies has fallen directly to consumers, who find themselves at the centre of a rapidly intensifying pricing battle among delivery platforms. With this move, Zepto not only enhances its service appeal but also sets a precedent for competitive dynamics in the market going forward.
