Karan Johar Critiques Podcast Culture, Calls for Respect in Film Industry
Filmmaker Karan Johar condemns disrespectful podcasters and astrologers, urging an end to harmful narratives in the film community.
Karan Johar, an influential figure in Indian cinema, has publicly expressed his concerns regarding a rising trend among podcasters who he claims invite insensitive guests to make unfounded statements about the film industry. The filmmaker took to Instagram on Saturday to criticise the phenomenon, which he believes harms both individuals and the reputation of the industry at large.

Criticism of Podcasters and Astrologers
In his lengthy Instagram post, Karan Johar shared his reservations about a specific faction of podcasters, referring to them as part of a 'sub-culture' that is disrespecting seasoned professionals in the film sector. He mentioned that these podcasters invite guests with questionable credibility, who engage in making disparaging remarks about established personalities within the industry. “This needs to stop!” he asserted emphatically.

Johar elaborated, stating, “I have utmost respect for credible and respectable members of the media! However, these chat shows, using new-age terminology, invite guests who have nothing to lose and proceed to spew venom against hardworking and legendary members of our fraternity.” His comments suggest that free speech should not come at the expense of accountability and mutual respect.

Concerns Over Predictions and Speculations
The filmmaker also took issue with psychics and astrologers who predict negative outcomes or events concerning celebrities, emphasising that such actions are both 'insensitive' and 'disgusting.' He urged for a differentiation between free speech and clickbait tactics that serve only to amplify negativity and sensationalism.

Johar did not specify any particular podcasters or hosts in his post, but his comments reflect a broader frustration felt by many in the industry regarding the spread of misinformation and hurtful narratives.

Recent Works and Future Projects
In addition to his critiques, Karan Johar remains actively involved in film production. His latest project, ‘Dhadak 2’, which premiered on August 1, is a remake of the popular Tamil film ‘Pariyerum Perumal’ and features actors Triptii Dimri and Sidhant Chaturvedi. Johar’s directorial efforts were recently recognised when he won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment for ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahani’.

Furthermore, Johar is set to make an appearance in Aryan Khan’s directorial debut, ‘The Ba***ds of Bollywood’. The series, featuring his cameo in a teaser, is scheduled for release on Netflix on September 18.

Industry Reactions
Johar's statements have sparked discussions among industry insiders and the public alike. Many agree that respecting the careers and lives of artists is essential, particularly in an era where online narratives can easily shape public perception.

As the landscape of media continues to evolve, it remains to be seen whether calls for greater accountability will lead to lasting changes within podcasting and other forms of entertainment.

Despite his concerns about the current state of public discourse, Karan Johar continues to push the boundaries of storytelling in Indian cinema, demonstrating his commitment to both creative expression and the well-being of his peers in the film industry.
