India will present its achievements in the power and energy sectors at the upcoming BRICS Energy Ministers' Meeting, scheduled for 19 May in Brazil, according to the Ministry of Power. The country aims to underline its advances in renewable energy, clean energy innovation, and long-term nuclear goals during the high-level multilateral dialogue.
Union Minister for Power and Housing and Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal, has departed on an official visit to represent India at the summit, which brings together senior officials from the five BRICS nations—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
The annual meeting is being held under the theme “Empowering Global South Cooperation for Inclusive and Sustainable Global Governance.”
Clean Energy and Access at the Forefront
The ministry said India intends to use the forum to highlight key developments over the past decade, including a 90 per cent increase in overall power generation capacity. This expansion has been accompanied by significant progress in areas such as solar and wind energy, biofuels, and green hydrogen.
India will also reaffirm its broader goals of improving energy accessibility and affordability for its population, while maintaining momentum towards a cleaner energy mix.
“India’s approach to energy policy is focused on sustainability and inclusivity,” the ministry said in a statement. “The BRICS platform offers a unique opportunity to collaborate with like-minded nations on building a resilient and equitable energy future.”
The minister is expected to outline India’s strategic efforts in clean energy transitions, including various national initiatives designed to reduce dependency on fossil fuels and enhance domestic energy resilience.
Nuclear Power Expansion in Long-Term Plans
In addition to renewable energy milestones, India will also share its plans for scaling up nuclear power as part of its net-zero emissions target by 2070.
At a recent meeting of the Consultative Committee of the Ministry of Power, Minister Manohar Lal confirmed that the government is aiming to expand India’s nuclear capacity to 100 gigawatts by 2047 under the 'Viksit Bharat' (Developed India) vision.
Currently, the country operates 25 nuclear reactors with a combined installed capacity of 8,880 megawatts. Eight additional reactors with a projected 6,600 megawatts are under construction, while plans are underway for 10 more reactors capable of generating 7,000 megawatts.
The government believes nuclear energy will play a critical role in achieving carbon neutrality while bolstering long-term energy security.
“Beyond electricity generation, nuclear technology offers potential in other critical sectors such as hydrogen production, desalination, process steam, and even space heating,” Minister Lal stated.
BRICS as a Platform for South-South Collaboration
The BRICS Energy Ministers' Meeting serves as an important platform for cooperation among emerging economies.
Discussions typically centre on collective efforts to ensure affordable, secure, and sustainable energy across the Global South.
India’s participation in the summit comes at a time when it is seeking to strengthen its international energy partnerships, particularly in light of growing energy demand and climate commitments.
Each member country brings distinct experiences and technologies to the table, with shared interests in balancing growth with sustainability.
India's Broader Energy Strategy
India’s energy transformation is taking place within the framework of several national missions, including the National Solar Mission, National Hydrogen Mission, and various state-level renewable energy programmes.
The country is also expanding its grid infrastructure and storage capacity to manage intermittent renewable supply. According to the Central Electricity Authority, India’s installed renewable capacity exceeded 125 gigawatts as of early 2025, making it one of the fastest-growing clean energy markets globally.
Meanwhile, international collaboration through forums like BRICS, G20, and the International Solar Alliance forms a key part of India’s global energy diplomacy.
As India prepares to present its vision and achievements on the BRICS stage, it aims not only to strengthen regional ties but also to position itself as a leading voice in sustainable energy development.
