The Indian Navy has consistently played a pivotal role in fostering maritime diplomacy and regional cooperation
The Indian Navy’s hydrographic survey ship, INS Sarvekshak, has successfully completed a major hydrographic survey in Mauritius, covering an extensive area of over 25,000 square nautical miles. The completion of this project marks a significant milestone in maritime collaboration between India and Mauritius and strengthens regional ties under India’s vision of SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region).
During a formal ceremony held onboard the vessel on Thursday (January 23, 2025), High Commissioner of India to Mauritius Anurag Srivastava formally handed over the fair sheet of the hydrographic survey, newly prepared nautical charts, and survey equipment to Mauritius President Dharambeer Gokhool. The new nautical charts and data will play a pivotal role in enhancing Mauritius’ maritime infrastructure, resource management, and coastal development planning.

In addition to its operational commitments, INS Sarvekshak hosted a joint India-Mauritius yoga session on January 20, 2025. The event brought together the ship’s crew, personnel from the National Coast Guard of Mauritius, and members of the Indira Gandhi Centre for Indian Culture (IGCIC). Captain Tribhuvan Singh, Commanding Officer of INS Sarvekshak, also met with Minister of Housing and Lands Shakeel Ahmed Yousuf Abdul Razack Mohamed. During the meeting, Captain Singh provided detailed insights into the survey operations undertaken by the Indian Navy and discussed future opportunities for collaboration.
INS Sarvekshak, which operates under the Southern Naval Command, is equipped with state-of-the-art hydrographic survey tools, including advanced sonar systems, four survey motor boats, and two small boats. The ship also features a helicopter and a Bofors 40 mm gun, enhancing its operational versatility.
The vessel is renowned for its innovation, having received the runner-up trophy in the 2015 Innovation Trophy Awards for developing a unique solution for tidal measurement during hydrographic surveys.
By supporting Mauritius in developing its maritime capabilities, India continues to demonstrate its commitment to its neighbors and the region as a whole. The survey data will enable Mauritius to make informed decisions about its maritime domain, enhance navigational safety, and plan for future coastal development projects.
