Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a telephone call from US President Joe Biden on Monday (August 26, 2024) and discussed the “shared concern” over the situation in Bangladesh in addition to his recent visit to Ukraine.

During their conversation, the two leaders spoke about the need to ensure the safety of minorities, particularly Hindus, in Bangladesh, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said.

“The two leaders expressed their shared concern over the situation in Bangladesh. They emphasised restoration of law and order and ensuring safety and security of the minorities, particularly Hindus, in Bangladesh,” a statement issued by the PMO said.

They also discussed the situation in Ukraine with Prime Minister Modi briefing President Biden on his recent visit to Ukraine, the PMO added. “He reiterated India’s consistent position in favour of dialogue and diplomacy and expressed full support for early return of peace and stability,” the official statement noted.

Prime Minister Modi visited Ukraine on August 23, 2024, becoming the first Indian PM to do so since the European nation became independent in 1991. During talks with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv, PM Modi emphasised that a peaceful solution for the Ukraine conflict was best for humanity. His visit to Ukraine took place about six weeks after he met Russian President Vladimir Putin while in Moscow on July 8-9, 2024.

India has consistently highlighted the role of dialogue and diplomacy for peace and stability in the region since the beginning of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022.

On Bangladesh, Prime Minister Modi has stressed the need for ensuring the safety of minorities including Hindus during telephone conversations with Interim Government Chief Advisor Mohammed Yunus. During a telephone call to PM Modi on August 16, 2024, Yunus assured that the Interim Government would prioritise the protection, safety and security of Hindus and all minority groups in Bangladesh.

During Monday’s phone call, Prime Minister Modi conveyed his appreciation for President Biden’s deep commitment to the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership, which is based on shared values of democracy, rule of law and strong people-to-people ties.

“The leaders reviewed the significant progress in bilateral relations and highlighted that India-US partnership is aimed at benefiting the people of both countries as well as the entire humanity,” the PMO said, adding that the two leaders had a detailed exchange of views on a number of regional and global issues.
