Maldives Minister of Foreign Affairs Moosa Zameer will be on an official visit to India on Thursday (May 9, 2024).

During his visit to New Delhi, Foreign Minister Zameer will meet External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar for discussions on bilateral and regional issues of mutual interest, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Tuesday (May 7, 2024).

Maldives is India’s key maritime neighbour in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) and Foreign Minister Zameer’s visit is expected to lend further momentum to the bilateral cooperation between the two countries, the MEA noted.

Ties between the two nations have come under a strain after President Mohamed Muizzu came to power in November 2023. Seen as pro-China, he sought the return of Indian military personnel stationed in the nation to provide technical assistance for humanitarian missions.

But some recent developments indicate a keenness by both sides to get the bilateral relationship back on track.

Maldivian Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed met with Indian High Commissioner to the Maldives Munu Mahawar on May 1, 2024. The discussions focused on potential areas for trade and economic cooperation.

This meeting came on the heels of India’s decision on April 5, 2024, to increase the quotas of several essential commodities exported to the Maldives. This included a 5% increase in the quota for items like eggs, potatoes, onions, sugar, rice, wheat flour, and dal
