India successfully carried out Mission Divyastra, the first flight test of indigenously developed Agni-5 missile with Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology, on Monday (March 11, 2024).

The MIRV technology will ensure that a single missile can deploy multiple war heads at different locations.

With the success of Mission Divyastra by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), India has joined the select group of nations who have MIRV capability.

The Agni-5 is an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) with a range of 5,500 to 5,800 kilometres. The Agni-5 MIRV is equipped with indigenous Avionics systems and high accuracy sensor packages. This ensures that the re-entry vehicles reach the target points within the desired accuracy. The capability is a symbol of India’s growing technological prowess.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the scientists of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) for successfully conducting the maiden flight test.

"Proud of our DRDO scientists for Mission Divyastra, the first flight test of indigenously developed Agni-5 missile with Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology," he posted on micro-blogging platform X.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also congratulated the DRDO scientists and team involved in the mission.

“India today successfully tested Mission Divyastra - the first flight test of indigenously developed Agni-5 missile with Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology and joined the select group of nations who have MIRV (Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry) capability.

Congratulations to our @DRDO_India scientists and the entire team for this exceptional success. India is proud of them!” he posted on X.

The Agni series of missiles are the mainstay of India’s nuclear delivery options. The Agni-1 to 5 missiles have been designed & developed by the DRDO to act as deterrence and meet the country’s security requirements. The Agni 1 to 4 missiles, which are already deployed, have ranges varying between 700 km to 3,500 km.
