Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will visit Italy and France from October 9-12, 2023 in a bid to further deepen defence ties with the two European nations.
During the first leg of his two-nation visit, Singh is scheduled to meet Italian Defence Minister Guido Crisetto in Rome, the Ministry of Defence said on Sunday (October 8, 2023).
The relationship between India and Italy was elevated to Strategic Partnership in March 2023 during the visit of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in March 2023.
Defence cooperation, particularly in the field of manufacturing, co-production, co-design, co-innovation, figured prominently in discussions between Prime Minister Meloni and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, according to information shared by India's Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra after the bilateral talks. The two leaders decided to expand and deepen military exercises to all levels in the armed forces, Kwatra had said.
According to the Joint Statement issued during the visit, the two Prime Ministers welcomed the steady deepening of defence cooperation between the two countries in the last two years, underscoring the need to further enhance mutual engagement in this field through the conclusion of an MOU on Defence Cooperation.
The two leaders agreed on the potential for defence equipment co-development and co-production in India. PM Modi invited Italian defence companies to actively participate in Make in India initiative, the statement added.
