Prime Minister Modi highlights India’s progress in areas like renewables, startups, pharma, IT, digital payments and infrastructure
Speaking at a business lunch organised during his visit to Greece on Friday (August 25, 2023), Prime Minister Narendra Modi encouraged business leaders to utilize the investment opportunities in India and be a part of India’s growth story.

The event, hosted by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, saw participation from leading Indian and Greek CEOs from diverse sectors including shipping, infrastructure, and energy.

Prime Minister Modi highlighted India’s progress in areas like renewables, startups, pharma, IT, digital payments and infrastructure and the various initiatives undertaken to foster business.

During the joint press conference with Greek Prime Minister Mitsotakis earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi talked about their belief that by encouraging trade and investment between the two counties, industrial and economic cooperation could be taken to a new level.

"Mr. Prime Minister and I, agree that our bilateral trade is rapidly growing and has immense potential for further growth. We have set a target to double our bilateral trade by the year 2030," Prime Minister Modi said

One of the significant outcomes of Prime Minister Modi's visit was the decision to elevate Greek-Indian bilateral ties to the level of a 'Strategic Partnership'.

According to a Joint Statement on the discussions that took place on Atehens, the two nations have agreed to work to further expand bilateral cooperation in the political, security and economic spheres. The two Prime Ministers also decided to take steps to further strengthen people-to-people ties between the two countries.

Both leaders reiterated the need for further broadening and deepening bilateral engagements, in the field of defence, shipping, science and technology, cyber space, education, culture, tourism and agriculture. They took note of the signing of the MOU on Cooperation in the field of Agriculture, including the establishment of a Hellenic-Indian Joint Sub-committee on Agriculture for facilitating sectoral cooperation for mutual benefit, the statement added.

"The Prime Ministers noted with satisfaction that both Greece and India have shown extraordinary economic resilience, despite the challenges in their respective regions, and have restored domestic economic growth. The two Prime Ministers expressed their strong support for the ongoing India-EU trade and investment negotiations and the early implementation of the India-EU Connectivity Partnership," the Joint Statement said.

While in Athens, Prime Minister Modi also paid tributes at the ‘Tomb of Unknown Soldier’. He thereafter inspected a ceremonial Guard of Honour. His other engagements included interactions with academicians and members of the Indian community.
