The last Prime Ministerial visit from India to Greece was in 1983
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that he looks forward to his visit to Greece opening a new chapter in the multifacted India-Greece relationship.
Prime Minister Modi will travel to Athens, Greece on August 25, 2023 after attending the 15th BRICS Summit in South Africa. The visit comes at the invitation of Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
"This will be my first visit to this ancient land. I have the honour to be the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Greece after 40 years," Prime Minister Modi said in his departure statement as he left New Delhi for South Africa and Greece on Tuesday (August 22, 2023).
"Contacts between our two civilizations stretch back over two millennia. In modern times, our ties have been strengthened by shared values of democracy, rule of law and pluralism," he said.
During Prime Minister Modi's visit to Greece, both sides will look to expand and diversify trade and investment cooperation, deepen and expand the defense and security partnership, and strengthen infrastructure cooperation, Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra said during a special media briefing in New Delhi on Monday (August 21, 2023).
Discussions would also cover the shipbuilding industry, energy, agriculture, and education in addition to migration and mobility, Kwatra added.
Prime Minister Modi met the Greek Prime Minister in New York last in September 2019 on the sidelines of the UNGA. "The important thing to mention here is that the last Prime Ministerial visit from India to Greece was in 1983, so it is after a considerable length of long period of time actually that a Prime Ministerial visit from India is taking place to Greece," Foreign Secretary Kwatra pointed out.
Previous high-level exchanges between the two countries have also included a visit by former Presidents of India, late APJ Abdul Kalam and also former President Ram Nath Kovind. The Greek President had also paid a state visit to India in 1998, and the then Greek Prime Minister had visited India in 2008.
Greece is one of India's important European partners, is a member of the EU, of NATO, and a gateway to Europe and also to the EU market, and enjoys a privileged position at the crossroads of Asia, Europe and Africa.
"Both India and Greece are not just modern democracies, but we also share close and age-old historical and cultural relations. Important elements of our partnership include defense and security, shipping, and most recently the elements relating to the migration and mobility are being given shape in terms of structural partnership between India and Greece," Foreign Secretary Kwatra said at the special media briefing.
