This would be the first in-person BRICS Summit after three consecutive years of virtual meetings due to Covid-19
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will depart for Johannesburg, South Africa on Tuesday (August 22, 2023), where he would be participating in the 15th BRICS Summit. The three-day summit will take place from August 22 to August 24.
Announcing details about the visit at a special media briefing on Monday (August 21, 2023), Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra said, "The theme of the BRICS Summit this year is 'BRICS and Africa: Partnership for mutually accelerated growth, sustainable development and inclusive multilateralism'."
This would be the first in-person BRICS Summit after three consecutive years of virtual meetings owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, he added.
A business delegation from India is also travelling to South Africa to attend the Business Tracks meetings and the meetings of the BRICS Business Council, BRICS Women Business Alliance and the BRICS Business Forum. "After completing his engagements in Johannesburg, PM will travel to Greece for an official visit on August 25 at the invitation of PM of Greece," Foreign Secretary Kwatra said.
Announcing the visit last week, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had said that the BRICS Summit will provide an opportunity to review progress of the initiatives launched by the grouping, and identify future areas of activity.
During his visit, Prime Minister Modi will also hold bilateral meetings with some of the leaders present in Johannesburg, the MEA added.
When asked about the chances of a bilateral meeting between Prime Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the 15th BRICS Summit, Foreign Secretary Kwatra said, "The host country South Africa has invited large number of guest countries, besides BRICS members. The Prime Minister’s schedule, in terms of bilateral meetings with those leaders who would be present in South Africa is still being developed...".
On August 3, 2033, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa had invited Prime Minister Modi for the BRICS Summit being hosted by South Africa and briefed him on the preparations for the same. Prime Minister Modi had accepted the invitation and conveyed that he looked forward to his visit to Johannesburg to participate in the Summit.
After South Africa, Prime Minister Modi will pay an official visit to Greece on August 25, 2023 at the invitation of Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. This will be the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Greece in 40 years, the MEA noted.
"During PM Modi's visit to Greece, both sides will look to expand and diversify trade and investment segment of cooperation, deepen and expand defence and security partnership, infrastructure cooperation, shipbuilding industry...The visit would give both sides an opportunity to discuss also the regional and global issues of mutual interest and help broaden and deepen our bilateral engagement," Foreign Secretary Kwatra said during the special media briefing.
India and Greece enjoy civilizational ties, which have strengthened in recent years through cooperation in areas like maritime transport, defence, trade and investments and people-to-people ties.
"Prime Minister (Modi) will hold talks with Prime Minister Mitsotakis to discuss ways to further deepen the relationship. He will also interact with business leaders from both countries, as well as with the Indian community in Greece," the MEA said on August 18, 2023.
