India has highlighted many themes of contemporary relevance during its current UNSC presidency

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has announced India's candidacy as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2028–2029 term. India's 2021–22 term as an elected Council member ends on December 31.

"I'm glad to inform you that we have declared our candidature for our next tenure at the Council for 2028-29 and we look forward to being back," he told the media on Friday after the UNSC High-Level Briefing on the theme of Counter-Terrorism.

"We were trying to build consensus among Council Members on the broad principles of counter-terror architecture. We were seeking to also improve on the Delhi Declaration, which the Counter-terrorism committee had issued after its meetings In India at the end of October at the United Nations, New York," he informed the media.

On Thursday, he had chaired a UNSC discussion on reformed multilateralism.

EAM Jaishankar had arrived in the US on Tuesday to preside over the two major events held under India's current Presidency of the UN Security Council.

Speaking to the media on Friday, he said that said that during its presidency, India had attempted to bring many themes of contemporary relevance like Maritime Security, Technology in UN Peacekeeping, Reforms of the UN and Counter Terrorism to the center of the agenda and of the debate of the UN.

"We also sought to be the voice of the Global South on many issues of concern," EAM Jaishankar added.

India took up the UN Security Council's monthly rotating presidency on December 1 for the second time in its two-year term as an elected UNSC member.

The country has been at the forefront of calls for rapid reform of the Security Council, which has remained incredibly divided in addressing contemporary concerns.

India has argued that the UNSC does not adequately represent contemporary geopolitical realities and that its legitimacy is in danger if countries like India, which is an emerging power, are not given a permanent place at one of the world's most prestigious organizations.
