EAM Jaishankar listed five core concepts that the Mahatma espoused for a peaceful and just world
Mahatma Gandhi's values must continue to guide our actions to ensure peace and stability across the world as it struggles with violence and armed conflicts, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar stated on Wednesday.
He was speaking after unveiling Mahatma Gandhi's bust with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres at a solemn event on the North Lawns of the United Nations premises.
"Honored to join UNSG @antonioguterres and @UN_PGA Csaba Kőrösi in unveiling the bust of Mahatma Gandhi at the @UN Headquarters.
May his presence in these hallowed premises inspire the UN to live up to its founding ideals," EAM Jaishankar tweeted.
"Mahatma Gandhi was an uncompromising advocate for peaceful co-existence, non-discrimination & pluralism.
The new installation located at @UN Headquarters will serve as a reminder of the values Gandhi upheld, and to which we must remain committed," the UN Secretary General tweeted.
EAM Jaishankar listed five core concepts that the Mahatma espoused for a peaceful and just world: Ahimsa (non-violence); Satyagraha (truth force that guides non-violent resistance); Sarvodaya (welfare of all); Swaraj (self-rule) and Trusteeship (custodianship of the earth and sustainable use of natural resources). These very principles are also enshrined in UN Charter, he added.
"Today, when the world grapples with violence, armed conflicts, and humanitarian emergencies, these Gandhian ideals must continue to guide our actions in ensuring peace and stability around the world," he said.
"Conflict and inequality seem an inevitable part of human condition. Mahatma Gandhi’s greatest lesson to the world was that this need not be so. Conflicts can be resolved, and inequalities can be addressed. Without the right means, right ends can never be attained," he added.
EAM Jaishankar asserted that the unveiling of the Mahatma’s bust at the UN will stand as a timely reminder for all of us to follow his ideals better; in letter and spirit to create a peaceful world; which is the fundamental objective of the United Nations.
Ram Sutar, a prominent Indian sculptor and recipient of the Padma Shree award, created the Gandhi bust, which was presented by India to the United Nations. Ram Sutar also created the "Statue of Unity." The bust is the first Gandhi sculpture to have been placed in the UN building, which is beautifully decorated with presents and relics from all over the globe.
EAM Jaishankar is in the United States to preside over two landmark conferences on counterterrorism and reformed multilateralism during India's Presidency of the UN Security Council (UNSC) in December.
