The two sides also discussed ways to improve coordination and collaboration on consular matters

India and Bangladesh are looking at greater liberalization of visa processes and entrance and departure standards to further improve travel convenience between the two countries.

These and related issues were taken up at the third India-Bangladesh Consular Dialogue held in Dhaka on Monday.

Discussions covered a wide range of topics and the two sides discussed ways to improve coordination and collaboration on consular matters, said the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

These included the completion of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the early release of imprisoned fishermen as well as the repatriation of each other's detained citizens.

They also agreed that the more thorough application of the Revised Travel Arrangements (2018)'s provisions pertaining to tourist, student, and business visas, as well as more liberalization of visa processes and entrance and departure standards, would further improve travel convenience, the MEA said.

Both parties praised the close coordination between law enforcement organizations for reducing cross-border crime, preventing terrorism, and increasing mutual legal assistance. They also reaffirmed their commitment to keeping up the effort to create consular systems that are focused on citizens.

According to the MEA, India and Bangladesh agreed to further strengthen bilateral relations through simpler and more extensive people-to-people exchanges, taking into account the special friendship and bond that exists between the two nations, particularly in this year marking the 50th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations.

The delegation from India was led by Dr. Ausaf Sayeed, Secretary (CPV & OIA), and the group from Bangladesh was led by Amb. Mashfee binte Shams, Secretary (East), MoFA.

This framework for consular conversation was established in 2017 to debate and enhance consular, visa, and mutual legal aid cooperation between Bangladesh and India, therefore fostering closer inter-ethnic relations.

New Delhi will host the next consular dialogue.
